The thing is that I talk to dead people. I sometimes refer to them as Folk in Spirit or FIS for short. Then, there are also occasions when I talk to animals who have passed on. I’ve been known to communicate with a plant or two, mostly when they are thirsty, and I can’t ignore their cries for assistance. And, once I got in touch with a plastic lawn chair, which I hope never to do again. It’s possible. Perhaps the next time my computer starts going on the fritz, we might have a frank discussion about things in general.

But all my life, I’ve been she and her. I’m thinking I should update myself to be them. There are so many parts of me that can sometimes be outspoken to my own horror. I’ve mostly got a handle on it now. It was all part of evolving into a psychic life. You need rules.

Folk in Spirit don’t just waltz into your life and hey, life is hunky dory. Nope. People need rules. I have my own. One is that the channeling stays in my head. For a time, it did not. I was more comfortable channeling out loud. In the very beginning, it was somewhat problematic in that I wasn’t sure if I was thinking something or if somebody in spirit was saying something. For that reason, in those early days, I asked that I only speak to my spirit guide. Everybody else could wait a year. Those early days are important and not having every Tom, Dick, and Harry there to talk is a blessing. I used to call them the Peanut Gallery, and not only was it distracting, it was a noisy place in my head.

When my guide, Seth, first started talking, he sounded different from how I do. I don’t particularly have any special accent, having grown up in a military family and moved around a lot during my formative years. I went to thirteen different schools in twelve years. I do speak Spanish with a Norwegian accent, so that’s something. But Seth sounded much like Count Dracula would, a count from Transylvania. He is very precise, correct, and interesting. If he speaks aloud, he still sounds like that.

I didn’t learn for many years that he deliberately took it upon himself to present that way for me. It was a way for me to realize who was speaking in those early days. I think it is nice that it has continued in that manner. When Seth speaks to me telepathically, in my head, he sounds like me. There is no change in the voice anymore, and I believe that is due to my knowing the difference between us now.

Like I said, it all takes a while to get used to.

People are mostly psychic from the beginning. It is when we are children, I think it sort of goes away. We learn. You do it this way, not that way. No, don’t stick spaghetti up your nose and then snort it out. This is how you tie your shoes. This is how you brush your hair. None of this is alarming. It is how everybody learns.

People, like me, can be drawn toward a psychic life. Maybe we meet somebody and discover we can relate to what they have experienced. Or, we read books, fascinated with the story only to realize years later that it is something a person can actually encourage in their life.

Sometimes, people believe it is a gift, and not everybody has it. I think it takes a person who is interested in stuff, who wants to know how things work, who pays attention to the details other people couldn’t care less about, who might be candidates to channel like I do. There are, however, tons of other things you can practice and experience in the psychic realms. Channeling is just one of them. The first thing I tell a prospective student is, “You can’t be afraid.”

Rarely will I go around saying to people I channel. I just say, “I talk to dead guys.” It’s fun to watch their faces. A couple of times Jehovah Witnesses have come to our door. “Do you know Jesus?” “Yes, do you want to talk to him?” They excused themselves quickly. I think our house must be on a list because they don’t come around as much as they used to.

But here is something I recognize having done myself: I ask questions or begin talking about something totally off the subject to somebody else, and have it mean an incredible deal to them. That’s important psychic work. It is not me offering to be a conduit; it is my services being called upon without me actually encouraging them.

Here’s me on the telephone, saying, “Hi,” and my husband says, “Wow, I was just getting ready to call you.” That is a psychic moment. It doesn’t alarm either of us. It happens so often that it is a non-moment.
