Neurodivergent Authors Rocked 2020

This is the list you’ve been waiting for.

I’m a neurodivergent writer and happen to know a bunch of other neurodivergent writers, too. Here are the books that every neurodivergent reader (and ally) needs to know, in no particular order:

Camilla wrote an astounding book full of empathy and rigor about her life as a scientist and outsider, and she is only 26 years old.

Melody Moezzi is an accomplished writer, activist, attorney, creative writing professor and self-described bipolar feminist. I had the indescribable joy of interviewing her, and everyone should know her name.

I can’t wait to read this; Katherine May captures what so many of us feel year-round, especially from a sensory perspective, with one word: WINTERING.

David is a celebrated chef who opens up about his bipolar in this memoir, including thoughts about Anthony Bourdain.

This is my book, about psychiatric rhetoric and the (mis)diagnoses of women, covering several labels that share high sensitivity in common, with a focus on gender bias.

This isn’t a book but is a new podcast by writer/creative and Pop Culture Collaborative Senior Fellow, Shawn Taylor. The first episode just dropped and it is dope.

Making a New Reality is a book and ongoing emerging media project by innovator Kamal Sinclair, consultant to Sundance Film Institute and Ford Foundation, about the future of media, identity, and society, focusing on equity and justice. We have had several public conversations together this year which you can view at The Interracial Project, and at Book Soup.

This book by Devon Price is technically out in early 2021 but thought I’d drop it here just so folks know about it. Devon is a social psychologist and outspoken neurodiversity activist and writer.

This book is also out in early 2021 and while I don’t know if Grinker identifies as neurodivergent, he seems to be helping push narratives forward about valuing cognitive diversity and for that reason I am including his book on this list!

For more literary commentary, author interviews, social criticism and media analysis, follow along here on Medium or on Instagram, and in-person in the San Francisco Bay Area where we’ve run live events for the past four years.

If you love lists by neurodivergent people, for neurodivergent people, please forward, “clap,” and share!
