In a Nutshell
The art of summarizing what your heart knows
In a Nutshell
When you summarize something at the end of a long conversation or speech- “in a nutshell…”, you tend to pick up the most important points of the talk, and deliver them in the best possible manner, while also adhering to brevity and time constraints.
But you don’t just want to rush things for the sake of closure. You need to make an impact. A lasting impression so that when your audience remembers this conversation days, weeks, or months later, they can remember exactly what you wanted to deliver.
So the phrase, in a nutshell, automatically grabs people’s attention. Why? Because the human attention span, unfortunately, is decreasing over time. So it is quite possible, and almost inevitable, that they may have lost attention at some point. With this phrase they hope to recover what has been lost.
So you must follow a few rules while summarizing your voice:
- Cover only what’s important. Brevity is the soul of wit.
- Weave your personality into your words. It shouldn’t end up becoming a heartless drawl.
- Try bringing the conversation to a full circle. A witty callback to an incident, or an emphasis on the key takeaway, can definitely hit the sweet spot.
- Always end with food for thought. You have delivered your content, your work is done. Now, give your audience the space to think for themselves.
So, in a nutshell, people have too much to think about, and too much going on around them and within their mind. So, they will only remember a few lines of your conversation. What those lines are going to be, depends on how you subtly maneuver the dusk of the conversation to persuade them to look at the topic through your lens…
