Jiu‑Jitsu on the Street: Yes or No?
Fortunately, not often, but I do come across the astonishing question of how applicable jiu-jitsu is on the street. To such people, I have a counter-question: which exact jiu-jitsu do you mean? After all, boxing also comes in different forms.
From the standpoint of gaining useful practical skills that can be applied in everyday life, the question regarding street application is logical. However, I believe that if you are asking such a question and you have a genuine need to apply jiu-jitsu skills on the street, then something in your life is clearly not going well.
Every sport has conventions and limitations that restrict the application of certain skills. Notice that the question of using boxing for self-defense rarely comes up — because it’s obvious that a punch is enough for protection. At the same time, few people consider the fact that on the street there are no clear rules, and someone might resort to grappling.

Is jiu-jitsu applicable on the street? I am convinced that yes. A hand‑to‑hand fight usually doesn’t last long — about 30 seconds. After that, someone ends up on the ground, and that’s where jiu-jitsu proves itself better than boxing.
Yes, you can keep saying: “What if a boxer lands a hit…”, or “What if someone has a stick…”, or “What if something else…” And I’ll tell you: you would be right. What matters most is that it’s best when there is no fight at all. Any street fight is potentially a criminal offense.
In my training sessions, I teach that we are doing sports first and foremost. If I find out that someone goes around the streets bullying those who are weaker and generally behaves like a thug — I will kick them out without hesitation. I don’t want to keep such athletes around me, because it would reflect badly on my reputation.
Play sports, be smarter than your opponent, and don’t let conflicts escalate into fights — there is always a peaceful way to resolve things.
