The Ghost of Dilthey: Why the “Christian Worldview” Movement is Hiding its Roots

The term “Christian Worldview” is everywhere. Yet, no matter how closely I examine the discourse, one name is conspicuously absent: Wilhelm Dilthey.

While Immanuel Kant was the first to coin the term Weltanschauung, it was Dilthey who elevated it into the orbit of philosophical history. The giants of the Dutch Reformed tradition — thinkers like James Orr and Abraham Kuyper — operated within a shared intellectual atmosphere (Zeitgeist) fundamentally shaped by Dilthey’s philosophical grounding of worldview discourse. And yet, those who champion the “Christian Worldview” movement today in Korea (and elsewhere) seem to go out of their way to keep Dilthey in the shadows.

There is a reason for this evasion.

Understanding vs. Explaining

Dilthey sought to preserve the “Human Sciences” (Geisteswissenschaften) at a time when positivism and the natural sciences were encroaching upon the realm of the spirit. He famously distinguished between “Explaining” (Erklären) and “Understanding” (Verstehen).

In the natural sciences, objects are observed, standardized, and generalized — essentially “fossilized” within specific parameters of time and space to facilitate explanation. But for the human spirit — an organic, dynamic entity — such fossilization is impossible.

Dilthey argued that Kantian rationalism alone could not grasp the totality of human life. Human beings are an integrated whole of intellect, emotion, and will. To observe humanity and its cultural outputs, one cannot ignore concrete Life (Leben) and Experience (Erlebnis).

The Paradox of Plurality

Under this framework, Dilthey embraced historicism and brought the concept of a pluralistic “worldview” to the forefront. He saw the human spirit as something that reveals itself in “diverse” forms throughout history. Worldviews are the roots of this diversity — systemic perspectives through which humans understand the world, naturally varying across histories and cultures.

Dilthey identified three primary types of worldviews:

1. Naturalism
2. The Idealism of Freedom
3. Objective Idealism

This raises a troubling question for modern proponents of the “Christian Worldview”: Have they accepted Dilthey’s inherent pluralism? Or have they merely hijacked his terminology to dress their claims in a more sophisticated philosophical costume? Is it a calculated move by theologians — who are essentially driven by monism — to adopt pluralistic terminology simply to achieve their ends?

Turning in the Grave

What seeds have they sown in Dilthey’s pluralistic soil? Or have they simply swapped the signage on the storefront?

To me, a debate over “worldview” that omits its primary architect, Dilthey, feels like an exercise in hollow sophistry. It is deeply confusing to see those who insist on absolute oneness so aggressively utilize a concept rooted in plurality.

Dilthey must be turning in his grave.

This phenomenon persists because people have attempted to fill the void where “experience” should be with cold logic and rigid systems. Dilthey critiqued Kant by insisting that nothing is more vital than Leben (Life) and Erlebnis (Experience). But those who borrow his facade have carved out the substance, obsessed instead with the absolutism of “objectivity” devoid of personal conviction.

I can only describe this as:

“The self-satisfying logic of ‘believers without faith’ or ‘theologians without confession.’”
