Why Smart People Repeat Stupid Things
Most people do not fail because they lack information.
They know what they should do.
They know they should stop procrastinating. They know they should have the hard conversation. They know they should make the call. They know they should stop overthinking. They know they should follow through. They know they should stop repeating the same mistake.
And yet, under pressure, they do it again.
That is the problem at the center of my new book, Why Smart People Repeat Stupid Things: The Hidden Patterns Behind Self-Sabotage.
The question is not, “Why don’t people know better?”
The better question is:
Why does knowing better disappear when pressure rises?
Because most repeated behavior is not random.
It is patterned.
And many of those patterns were originally built to protect us.
Self-sabotage is often not stupidity. It is protection aimed at the wrong threat.
A person delays action because action creates exposure.
A founder avoids sales because rejection threatens identity.
A spouse avoids a hard conversation because conflict threatens security.
A high performer overthinks because certainty feels safer than risk.
A talented person hides because visibility feels dangerous.
From the outside, these behaviors look irrational.
From the inside, they feel necessary.
That is why advice usually fails.
People already have enough advice. They have books, podcasts, courses, strategies, plans, and checklists. The problem is not access to information.
The problem is what happens when pressure activates the old reaction.
In calm moments, we think clearly.
Under pressure, something older takes over.
That is where the pattern lives.
In the book, I break this down through the Identisophia framework.
The core idea is simple:
An expectation forms.
That expectation becomes connected to identity or security.
Reality threatens the expectation.
The threat activates a conditioned reaction.
The reaction creates behavior.
The behavior produces an outcome.
The outcome reinforces the pattern.
This is why people can repeat the same financial, emotional, relational, or business result even when they consciously want something different.
They are not repeating the result because they want the result.
They are repeating the reaction that keeps creating it.
That distinction matters.
Because once a person sees the reaction underneath the behavior, shame starts to lose power.
The question changes from:
“What is wrong with me?”
to:
“What is this pattern trying to protect?”
That shift is the beginning of change.
The book is organized around the behaviors people recognize most:
Why smart people self-sabotage.
Why knowing better does not stop them.
Why they overthink everything.
Why their mind will not let things go.
Why they procrastinate even when it hurts.
Why they avoid what matters most.
Why fear of failure controls them.
Why fear of success holds them back.
Why they stay stuck.
Why they keep repeating the same results.
Why change feels so hard.
And finally, how to stop repeating the pattern.
The purpose of the book is not to make people feel broken.
It is the opposite.
The purpose is to help people separate who they are from the pattern they mistook for themselves.
You are not your procrastination.
You are not your overthinking.
You are not your fear.
You are not your self-sabotage.
You are not your stuckness.
Those are patterns.
And patterns can be seen.
Once they are seen, they can be interrupted.
Once they are interrupted, they can be changed.
That is the real message of the book.
Not that smart people do stupid things.
But that smart people often repeat protective patterns that no longer protect them.
The problem was never intelligence.
The problem was never information.
The problem was never the core self.
It was the pattern they thought was them.
