The Story I Can’t Stop Writing

I wish I could say I’ve moved on.

That I’ve squeezed every lesson from it, written every version of it, turned over every stone and finally made peace with the past.

But some stories don’t stay where we leave them.

They circle back.

They show up in the middle of a quiet morning, in a conversation with a friend, in a half-written journal entry, or in the opening paragraph of something that was supposed to be about an entirely different topic.

They are the stories that refuse to be finished with us.

For me, that story is about starting over.

Not once.

Again and again.

The end of a marriage. The uncertainty of single motherhood. Reinventing myself professionally. Learning who I was when the roles and titles I had worn for years no longer fit. Standing at the midpoint of life and realizing that some dreams had changed, some had disappeared, and others were only beginning to emerge.

I’ve written this story from every angle imaginable.

I’ve written it from heartbreak.

I’ve written it from anger.

I’ve written it from exhaustion.

I’ve written it from a place of fierce determination.

And now, years later, I find myself writing it from a place of curiosity.

Because the story isn’t really about what happened.

It’s about what happened to me because it happened.

The woman who walked into those difficult years is not the same woman sitting here today. Somewhere between the disappointments and the rebuilding, between the plans that unraveled and the ones I never saw coming, I changed.

The transformation was gradual enough that I almost missed it.

Strength arrived disguised as necessity.

Confidence arrived disguised as survival.

Wisdom arrived disguised as mistakes.

And resilience arrived disguised as one ordinary day after another.

When I revisit this story now, I notice things I couldn’t see before. I have more compassion for the people involved. More grace for the choices I made. More understanding of how growth rarely happens in grand, cinematic moments.

More often, it happens quietly.

In the decision to keep going.

In the willingness to begin again.

In the courage to believe that your life is not over simply because it looks different than you imagined.

Perhaps that’s why this story keeps boomeranging back to me.

Not because I haven’t learned the lesson.

But because the lesson keeps evolving.

Every year adds a new layer of meaning. Every experience reveals a detail I overlooked before. Every version I write uncovers another truth hiding beneath the last one.

I suspect I’ll be telling this story for the rest of my life.

Not because I’m stuck in the past.

But because the past continues to teach me something about the person I’m becoming.

And maybe that’s what our boomerang stories are really for.

They aren’t unfinished stories at all.

They’re living ones.

The stories that grow as we grow.

The stories that keep returning because, somehow, they’re still helping us find our way home.

What story keeps finding its way back to you? The one you’ve written, told, or replayed a hundred times, yet still discover something new within? Sometimes the stories we can’t let go of are the very ones still trying to teach us who we are.
