Every Day You Wake Up Is a Mercy You Didn’t Earn

A quiet look at the mercy behind God’s waiting and what happens when it ends

“…there will be no more delay!” — Revelation 10:6 (GNT).

Nobody likes waiting.

We’ve built entire industries around eliminating waiting. From same-day delivery to instant streaming. There’s even Fast food that’s somehow still not fast enough. We want everything now, and when it doesn’t come now, we get restless and irritable and start checking our phones every thirty seconds like that’s going to help.

Waiting is honestly one of the hardest things we do as humans.

And yet, here’s a strange and beautiful thing: some of the most merciful things God does for us…come wrapped in delay!

The Angel’s Announcement Nobody Wants to Hear

In Revelation 10:6, a mighty angel makes a declaration:

“There will be no more delay.”

Time’s up, said the angel. This somehow reminds me of wrestler, John Cena’s theme song (The Time is Now) as he makes his entry towards the ring on WWE. Haha. I digress. The patience of God, that long, merciful, generous patience, is coming to its end. And everything that follows in Revelation chapters 11 through 18 is the heavy hand of judgment falling on the earth one after another.

It’s both sobering and terrifying image if you ruminate on it long enough.

But here’s the thing most people miss: before that angel made that announcement, there was delay. A long delay and deliberate one. And that delay wasn’t God being slow or distracted or unbothered. That delay was grace.

God’s Delay Has a Name: Patience

Peter says it plainly in 2 Peter 3:15:

“Count the patience of our Lord as salvation.”

He’s not saying patience is related to salvation or connected to salvation. He’s saying: count it as salvation. Treat it and understand it like that.

Every single day that goes by without judgment falling? That’s not luck. That’s God deliberately, intentionally holding back what, if we’re being brutally honest with ourselves, we actually deserve.

I know it’s a bit uncomfortable to realise that.

We’re so used to framing delay as something negative. You wait for test results and it’s agony. You wait for a job offer and every day feels heavier than the last. You wait for a relationship to heal and the silence is deafening. Delay, in our experience, usually means something is wrong or something is stuck.

But God’s delay is different. His delay is purposeful. It’s merciful. It’s Him giving us room: room to repent, room to change, room to turn around and move toward something better. Room to become, slowly and imperfectly, more like Christ.

It might seem nothing to our puny minds. But that’s EVERYTHING. Everything that He desires of us.

Are We Taking It for Granted?

Are we treating God’s patience like it’s just…the background noise of our lives? Like it’ll always be there, like a subscription that auto-renews every month without you doing anything?

Because I think a lot of us do without even realising it.

We think: I’ll get serious about this later. I’ll deal with that habit eventually. I’ll repair that relationship when things calm down. I’ll sort my priorities out when life gets less hectic. And days, weeks and months pass. And the urgency fades into routine.

But Revelation 10:6 is a reminder that later has a deadline. We just don’t know when it is.

Now. Scripture Is Actually Obsessed With Now.

There’s a reason Paul writes what he writes in 2 Corinthians 6:2:

“Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

He doesn’t say soon or eventually. He says now. Twice in the same sentence. That’s emphasis and urgency. It’s like someone grabbing you by the shoulders, gently but firmly, and saying: pay attention to this.

Salvation lives in the present tense. Not in the future you’re planning for or in the version of yourself you’ll become once everything settles. Right now, today, in this moment, this is the time.

It’s a bit like when a flight boarding announcement changes from “we will begin boarding shortly” to “this is the final call.” Both sentences are about the same flight. You can ignore the first one. You cannot afford to ignore the second.

Revelation 10:6 is the final call.

Every Day Is Still a Gift, Until It Isn’t

Here’s how I want to close this.

God’s patience is not passive. It’s not Him sitting back, arms crossed, waiting for us to get our act together on our own timeline. It’s active, intentional, almost extravagant mercy. Every morning you wake up is another day inside that mercy. Another chance. Another open door.

The angel hasn’t made that announcement for us yet. The delay is still running. And that means today, this ordinary Monday or Thursday or whatever day you’re reading this, is a day of grace.

Don’t sleepwalk through it. (Somnambulism is a great technical word!).

Don’t mistake the open door for a permanent fixture.

May we treat every day as what it actually is: an opportunity. To change. To grow. To move closer. To become a little more, in however small and imperfect a way, the person we were made to be.

Because when God says “there shall be no more delay,” everything stops. No more second chances or extensions.

The clock is still running.
