Ori is not your brain. It is not your skull. It is the invisible, sacred crown that sits above your physical head the seat of your personal divinity, your direct connection to Olódùmarè, and the master map of your destiny. Every Orisha, every babalawo, every amount of sacrifice is ultimately working in service of what your Ori has already determined.

The Three Parts of Ori

1. Ori Inu

The outer Ori: your physical head, your visible personality, how you present yourself to the world. The vessel through which your inner Ori expresses itself.

3. Ipori

The ancestral Ori: the collective destiny energy passed through your lineage. The spiritual inheritance of your bloodline that shapes the canvas your own Ori paints on.

Why Some Ori Seem to Struggle

Here is the teaching that changed everything for me when I first encountered it. Not all Ori are equal in their chosen paths. Some souls, before birth, chose or received an Ori that carries difficulty, not as punishment, but as a path of growth, depth, and eventual greatness that requires more time and more refinement. The Yoruba call this a “heavy” Ori.

Others received what the tradition calls a “cool” or “good” Ori, one whose chosen path flows more easily, whose blessings arrive with less resistance. This is not favouritism from Olódùmarè. It is the nature of different souls choosing different experiences for different purposes.

This is one of the most liberating teachings in all of Yoruba spirituality: your struggles are not random. Your hardships are not punishment. They are part of the path your Ori chose and Ifá exists precisely to help you navigate that path with wisdom instead of confusion, with sacrifice instead of suffering, and with alignment instead of resistance.

Signs Your Ori May Be Misaligned

Misalignment between your outer life and your inner Ori is one of the most common spiritual conditions that Ifá addresses. Here are the signs that your Ori may be calling for attention:

1. Repeated cycles of near-success

You get close to a major breakthrough, the job, the relationship, the deal and then something always collapses at the last moment. Not once. Over and over. This is a classic sign of an Ori that needs propitiation.

1. A deep sense of purposelessness

You are functioning working, eating, existing but you feel hollow inside, like you are living someone else’s life. Your Ori knows your true path and will make you restless until you find it.

2. Your efforts produce less than they should

You work harder than the people around you but produce less. The effort and the result feel disconnected. This gap is often spiritual, not practical.

3. An unshakeable feeling that you were meant for more

This is perhaps the most important sign. That quiet but persistent inner voice that says despite all evidence to the contrary that you were meant for something greater. That is not arrogance. That is your Ori speaking the truth of your destiny to you.

How to Honour and Strengthen Your Ori

Every person can begin working with their Ori today. The relationship between you and your Ori is the most personal spiritual relationship you will ever have more intimate than any Orisha, more direct than any prayer to Olódùmarè. Here is how to nurture it:

Speak to your Ori daily. Place your hand on your head, close your eyes, and speak honestly your fears, your desires, your gratitude, your confusion. Your Ori hears everything. This simple act of acknowledgment strengthens the connection between your outer life and your inner destiny.

Offer your Ori what it loves: In Yoruba tradition, the Ori is honoured with the foods and offerings that were chosen before birth. A proper Ifá consultation can reveal exactly what your Ori requires. But in the absence of that, cool water, white kola nut, and shea butter are universally accepted by all Ori as gestures of honour.

Live in alignment with your values: Your Ori was chosen because of the soul it belongs to you.
