In many Web3 products, access to a wallet is expected to be secured through strict verification processes.
At a surface level, this makes sense. When users are responsible for their own assets, security becomes critical.
However, the way this security is implemented can sometimes create unexpected friction.
In one case, a wallet access flow required users to answer a series of advanced trading-related questions in order to regain access.
The experience felt less like verification, and more like an exam.
This raises an important question.
Does answering trading questions actually prove ownership?
Ownership of a wallet does not require trading expertise. A user can legitimately hold assets without having a deep understanding of trading concepts.
By using knowledge as a proxy for ownership, the system introduces a fundamental mismatch.
At this point, the experience shifts from “secure” to “uncertain.”
Users may begin to question the intention behind the process.
Why am I being tested on trading knowledge to access my assets? What happens if I fail? Is this really about security, or am I being blocked?
Even if the system later provides guidance or retries, the initial trust may already be affected.
This highlights a key issue in Web3 product design.
Security mechanisms should validate ownership, not knowledge.
When systems rely on user expertise instead of clear ownership signals, they risk creating unnecessary friction and, more importantly, blocking legitimate users.
From a user perspective, this creates several challenges.
It introduces anxiety at a critical moment: access to personal assets.
It reduces trust, as the process feels unclear and misaligned.
And it increases the likelihood of abandonment, especially for less experienced users.
A more effective approach would focus on clarity and alignment.
Users should clearly understand why they are being asked to verify something.
Verification should be based on ownership signals, not unrelated knowledge.
And most importantly, the process should guide users, not test them.
In Web3, users already carry the full responsibility of their assets.
Adding unnecessary complexity at the moment of access does not increase security.
It weakens trust.
And in financial systems, trust is everything.
