The Coming Rains: A Test of Our Preparedness

Every year, we watch the clouds gather over Pakistan’s northern mountains with a mix of hope and anxiety. This year, the Pakistan Meteorological Department and NDMA have given us advance warning: from July 6th to 10th, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected across the northern regions.

I’ve been following this forecast closely, and honestly, it concerns me. While the authorities have assured us that there is no immediate danger of major river flooding, the risks are still significant. The National Disaster Management Authority has specifically warned about flash floods in hill torrents, urban flooding in cities, and landslides in the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir.

Here’s my take: early warning is only half the battle. The real test lies in how we respond. We’ve seen this story before — warnings issued, then forgotten, then disasters strike and we scramble for solutions.

The good news is that the rains could actually be beneficial. Water levels at Tarbela and Mangla dams are expected to rise, which is desperately needed as the meteorological department predicts higher than normal temperatures through September.

But the key question remains: are our municipal drainage systems ready? Are our disaster management teams prepared? Have we communicated these warnings effectively to the communities living in vulnerable areas?

This isn’t just about government preparedness — it’s about individual responsibility too. If you live in a flood-prone area, have an emergency plan. If you’re traveling to the northern regions this week, reconsider your plans. And most importantly, follow the instructions of local authorities.
