MacOS 27’s Headline Feature Is An Apology. I’m Staying on Sequoia.

The big upgrade this year is a slider that turns off last year’s redesign.

That’s not enough to move me.

Everyone’s telling me macOS 27 is the one. The redesign done right. So I went looking for what “done right” means this time.

It’s a slider.

I’m still on Sequoia, two versions behind now. I skipped Tahoe, and I’ve watched Golden Gate crawl toward its fall release the same way I watch every dot-zero release: what does this cost me, and what do I get back? This year the second number is thin.

The marquee feature undoes last year’s marquee feature

Golden Gate’s biggest talking point lives under System Settings → Appearance: a Liquid Glass slider.

Drag it from clear toward tinted and the frosted translucency Apple spent all of Tahoe selling you gets dialed back, until the text on your menus is readable again.

So the signature setting of macOS 27 exists to turn down the signature look of macOS 26. That’s a correction with a nice UI bolted on, shipped a year late.

But at least macOS has good readability once again.

I’m two versions behind, and nothing is broken.

Golden Gate is in public beta right now, with the install failures and Wi-Fi drops you’d expect. Tahoe took most of a year of point releases before it stopped shipping patches every three weeks.

Staying on a finished OS while two newer ones fight their way to stable isn’t falling behind.

“Faster” is doing a lot of work

Quicker AirDrop. Faster network browsing. Better Spotlight suggestions. Apple calls this “more responsive than ever,” and I believe the benchmarks.

But faster than what? On my Apple Silicon Mac, AirDrop already lands in seconds. Spotlight already finds what I ask for.

Shaving a beat off tasks that already feel instant isn’t what pulls me off a machine that already does what I need.

The Siri they sold me in 2024 still isn’t here

Here’s the one thing that could actually justify the jump: the Apple Intelligence Siri.

Personal context, on-screen awareness, actions across your apps. Apple demoed it in 2024 and promised it for spring 2026.

It’s July. It slipped again, trickling out in pieces, some pushed toward 27, none of it the assistant they put on stage. The one feature that might drag me forward is the one feature Apple keeps not shipping.

macOS is bending toward a Mac I don’t own

Golden Gate quietly grew a real touch interface. Menus that swell under a fingertip. Controls that behave differently for a cursor than for a finger. Full touch support in Sidecar. All groundwork for the rumored touchscreen MacBook.

I work on a trackpad Mac and I’m not buying new hardware this year.

Reaching up to smudge my screen solves a problem I don’t have. Every ounce of that touch scaffolding is weight I carry for a device I’ll never touch.

What would actually move me

Golden Gate isn’t bad, and I’m not pretending it is. The readability slider genuinely helps. You can finally tell at a glance which window is focused.

The deeper Spotlight actions and the expanded Shortcuts triggers are exactly the direction I want macOS to go.

I’ll get there eventually. But for now I will be waiting for the new Siri.
