Move Beyond Your Title to Drive Ecosystem Impact: Part 1

We’ve all seen it happen. A high-performing individual contributor gets promoted. They get a shiny new business card, a “Manager” or “Director” tag on their LinkedIn profile, and suddenly, people start looking at them differently. A title can open a door, but you are the one who has to walk through it. A title can give you authority, but leadership is what earns you trust.

At ISM we’ve worked with entrepreneurs and executives in over 100 countries. Across cultures, industries, and community contexts, the most impactful leaders aren’t the ones flexing the “biggest” titles. They’re the ones who consistently make the people around them stronger.

We want to reframe the idea of a position leader in a more empowering way: Not as an insult, but as a starting point.

Over the next few posts, we’ll walk through how you can upgrade from relying on your role to leading with influence — and how that kind of leadership creates real ecosystem impact by empowering others.

What is a Leadership Position? When we talk about a “leadership position” we mean formal authority. The “rights” given to you by the organization: The right to assign tasks, approve vacations, evaluate performance, etc.

But as John Maxwell pointed out in his framework, the position leader level is the lowest level of leadership influence. At this stage, people follow you because they have to — because you are the boss, and they want to keep their jobs.

There is zero “extra” effort given to a position leader. People will do exactly what is required of them: and not a single thing more. They’ll clock in at 9:00, clock out at 5:00, and follow the letter of the law while ignoring the spirit of the mission. I’m not saying having a title is bad. Titles are necessary for structure.

But if your title is the only reason people are listening to you, you’re standing on very thin ice.

The Opportunity at Level One I’ve enjoyed watching ecosystems grow all over the world, and one of the most encouraging patterns I’ve seen is this:

When a leader makes the shift from “position” to “people,” the entire environment around them gets better.

So instead of calling Level One “danger,” let’s call it what it really is: a launchpad.

If you’re currently leading mostly through your job description, that doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you have a clear next step — and it’s a powerful one. Here are a few signs you’re ready for the upgrade (and what that upgrade unlocks):

Morale Lifts: When people feel respected and trusted, they bring more of themselves to the work — ideas, energy, and ownership.

Retention Improves: When you invest in people, they don’t just “stay.” They grow — and they help the team grow with them.

Mission Over Checklists: When you consistently connect tasks to purpose, people stop doing the minimum and start moving the mission.
