Hypocrisy is Ancient: How Christianity Was Hijacked in the 4th Century

Those going through faith deconstruction today usually blame modern church hypocrisy and corrupt pastors. You are angry at a system that says one thing and does another. You are right to be angry.

But this hypocrisy is not a modern invention. The system was brutally hijacked over 1,500 years ago.

It began in the 4th century under the cezaropapism of Emperor Constantine. The Emperor didn’t care about historical truth; he wanted political stability. The main architect of this hijacking was Athanasius of Alexandria. He didn’t defeat his theological opponents through superior logic or scriptural text — he used blackmail, imperial coercion, and state force to crush the free mind and character of anyone who disagreed, including the poet Arius.

This was the birth of the spiritual salesmen. They traded the concrete, historical, and physical Logos for abstract, state-enforced Alexandrian mystical fog. It is easier to manipulate people with abstract mysticism than with historical facts.

When Christ said a candle should not be put “under a bushel” (Matthew 5:15), the Latin text uses the word “SUB” (sub modio). The ultimate irony is that today’s religious institutions continue to do exactly that: hiding the historical reality of the text under a SUB-stack of political compromise and institutional self-interest.

True reconstruction means moving the candle out from under their table. We must return to Antiochene realism — the school that defended the historical-grammatical truth of the text long before imperial councils turned faith into a political weapon. Do not abandon the Logos just because hypocrites hijacked the system.
