The Doctor Panda I Never Got

A childhood surprise, an unexpected lesson, and a toy that never left

As a child, every time I opened a Gems surprise, I hoped to find Doctor Panda. For some reason, he seemed special to me. Maybe it was the white coat, the sense of purpose, or simply the feeling that he was the “best” panda to get.

But when the surprise finally came, it wasn't Doctor Panda.

It was Racer Panda.

I remember feeling disappointed. It wasn’t the panda I had imagined. It wasn’t the one I had wished for. In my mind, I had already decided what the perfect outcome looked like, and this wasn’t it.

Years have passed since then, but that tiny childhood memory has stayed with me.

Sometimes I wonder if life itself works in much the same way. **We spend so much time hoping for our own version of Doctor Panda**—a particular dream, a specific destination, a carefully imagined future. We become convinced that only that outcome will make us happy.

And then life hands us Racer Panda instead.

Something unexpected.

Something different.

Something we never asked for.

At first, **it feels like a disappointment. Later, it becomes a story. And sometimes,* it even becomes a part of who we are.*

The strange thing is that I still have that Racer Panda.

The toy I never wanted is still with me after all these years, while the Doctor Panda I dreamed about never arrived. Somehow, the thing I rejected became the thing that stayed.

Maybe that's the universe's sense of humor.
