🚨 America’s GLP-1 Dilemma: Vanity Weight Loss Over Diabetes — The Society We’re Choosing

We have 40.1 million Americans with diabetes (1 in 8) and 115.2 million with prediabetes. Obesity affects ~40% of adults. These fuel our #1 and #2 killers: heart disease and stroke.

Yet 1 in 8 U.S. adults (12%) are now on GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound — many for pure weight loss, not diabetes.10

This isn’t Big Pharma forcing the issue. It’s us — our choices, our demand, our culture.

Look at the ad blitz: Novo Nordisk alone spent nearly $500 million in the first 9 months of 2025 on Wegovy + Ozempic — $316 million just pushing the weight-loss brand Wegovy. Lilly matched the frenzy for Zepbound. “Summer body” gets primetime slots. Straight diabetes management? Not so much.21

Health leaders are clear-eyed. Dr. Jasdeep Saluja (American College of Lifestyle Medicine): “GLP-1s are transforming the treatment of obesity, with immense potential for weight loss and improving health outcomes… yet we must incorporate nutritional and lifestyle treatments to maximize effectiveness.”

WHO’s Dr. Tedros has echoed the same: meds help, but they won’t solve the crisis alone.

We’re not helpless victims here. GLP-1s do help the 26.5% of diagnosed diabetics using them. But the explosion in demand and marketing screams louder: beach-ready bodies > blood sugar control and root-cause fixes like food systems, daily movement, and prevention. Quick-fix culture wins again.14

This is the mirror we need to face: Are we comfortable with a massive pharma boom powered more by vanity/cosmetic weight loss than confronting the diabetes epidemic head-on? It’s not evil industry scheming — it’s society voting with prescriptions, eyeballs, and wallets for the easy button over the harder, deeper work.

Progress via powerful tools? Or a warning sign about what we truly prioritize?

What do you think — miracle drug reflecting smart choices, or symptom of deeper societal shortcuts? Drop your take.
