Tell The Truth #nosophistry

Weeks back I listened to a WLRN interview with the superintendent of Broward Schools @robertwruncie stating that they were going to look at everything they have available and make the necessary changes, so school shootings in the County don’t take place again. Now the buck stops with him.

WHO’S BUCK IS THAT, MR SUPERINTENDENT? Reality check…Although lots of (bad) things happened at MSD, the system seemed to work as it should have. Needs updating, but it worked as intended at that time. It checked all the boxes, letting everyone off the hook. Let an educator system design all the boxes that need to be checked, and you have a robust workbook of checkmarks.

The missing link is that checkmarks fail to connect the dots. The proof of this is that the leader of BCSS is still leading the schools-not a derogatory statement towards him, I’m only stating the facts.

Let’s tell the truth: Recap: The system failed to connect the dots. The evidence was there (plenty of it), but BCSS was unable to connect the dots. It did check-off the required boxes.

WHAT DO OTHER STATES DO?

1. Removal of State Liability Caps for tort cases. “When a school has information (or should have known) that a violent incident may occur, and they fail to stop it, the liability cap is removed, and a suit can proceed without the liability cap.

That sent shivers to a particular State’s school system, but with that law, every person in the school system now has their skin exposed. It empowers people to go above the idleness of the checking boxes to protect their students.

Sadly, this “Roberts Rules” process of handling safety removes responsibility away from individuals in leadership.

2. Put a reporting system that (honestly) connects the dots and drives them down to the people that have traction. When a tip is received, the principal and admin (team) of the school should accept it as well. LEO or fusion center filters not applied. Most times (BELIEVE ME) this team will know if the tip is credible and what action should take place. There are 20 years of metrics that clearly say fusion centers can’t correctly sort all tips (we have AI now) and you have to drive tips to the boots-on-the-ground- aka school principal and teachers.

3. To do #2, you need to place a C.I.T. team in every school. Don’t create a commission to evaluate and report back (reinvent the wheel) just follow what other States that have done. Better to work with someone else’s best practices than to send the Marines to do Recon to create a plan. (sorry service people)

4. Remove restrictions of weapons in schools, allowing teachers to carry if they want to do so.

DON’T ARM TEACHERS, THAT IS STUPID!

Teachers should not be (intended) expected to stop active shooter incidents by becoming part of the law enforcement effort. They already have a job and don’t need another one. However; this only gives a teacher the option to use like-force to save his own life, in self-defense, and if that happens, the lives of others. A teacher must have the right to self-defense just as everyone else.

5. Offer FREE TRAINING to teachers that are interested in carrying their concealed weapon.
