Beyond Prestige: The Case for Equity in Ivy League Admissions

As I sit down to write this, I think about education’s transformational potential. Many people view the Ivy League as the height of intellectual success, a place where destinies are built and aspirations come true. But when we examine these prestigious universities’ admissions policies, an important question arises: Are we genuinely giving all students more opportunities, or are we just maintaining a system that benefits a selected few?

In the United States, the practice of legacy admissions has been a part of higher education since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Consider Harvard University in 1900, when it formalized its admissions procedures and implemented a rule that gave preference to legacy applicants with family connections to alumni. The expectation was that these students would not only be loyal but also financially supportive of the college. Despite its allure, this tradition has important ramifications, especially in regard to equity and diversity.

We come across pivotal legal turning points that changed schooling as we travel through the 20th century. The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, was one significant event. A push for greater educational justice was sparked by this historic ruling, which forced educational institutions to give all students, regardless of race, similar chances. However, Ivy League and other elite universities frequently evaded these regulations, allowing legacy admissions to continue unchecked.

Harvard University, which questions its legitimacy and demands a reconsideration of the criteria used to determine merit in the admissions process. As the Supreme Court considers the case’s ramifications, it emphasizes how urgently Ivy League institutions’ admissions policies need to change.

Raising equity in higher education involves more than just changing laws; it also entails tearing down the obstacles that have traditionally kept gifted people from a variety of backgrounds out. We are at a turning point, and it is imperative that we push for a more fair admissions procedure.
