Scary Movie Tuesdays: Scary Movie 5
The One Where Everything Went Wrong
By the time Scary Movie 5 rolled into theaters, the franchise wasn’t just running out of steam — it had completely lost its identity. Everything about this movie was just off from the past four films.
What started with Scary Movie as a sharp, chaotic send-up of horror had already evolved through different styles in Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4. But this? This feels less like a continuation and more like a full-on reboot… just without the things people actually liked.
The Setup: Paranormal Chaos, Minus the Heart
The plot loosely follows a couple who adopt three children and begin experiencing strange supernatural events in their home — clearly riffing on films like Paranormal Activity and Black Swan.
There are also jabs at Mama, Inception, and whatever else was popular at the time, stitched together into a plot that feels more like a checklist than an actual story.
Unlike previous entries, where the narrative at least pretended to hold things together, this one barely tries. It’s a series of disconnected sketches dressed up as a movie.
The Cast: A Franchise Without Its Face
Here’s the biggest problem: no Cindy, no Brenda.
For the first time, the series completely drops its core characters — meaning no Anna Faris and no Regina Hall. And without them, the film loses the comedic backbone that carried the previous four entries.
Instead, we get a new lineup led by Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex (returning, but in a completely different role). While the cast is packed with recognizable names — Charlie Sheen (also returning in a different role), Terry Crews, Katt Williams, Snoop Dogg — none of them manage to fill the void left behind.
It’s not that they’re bad — it’s that they’re not given anything memorable to work with.
The Humor: Reference Overload
If Scary Movie 3 and 4 leaned into rapid-fire jokes, Scary Movie 5 just… forgets to make them land.
The film relies heavily on referencing popular movies, but without the clever twist or timing that made earlier entries work. It often feels like the joke is simply “remember this movie?” — and then it moves on before doing anything interesting with it.
There are moments where you can see glimpses of the old style (thanks in part to writers like David Zucker and Pat Proft), but they’re buried under a pile of uninspired gags and awkward pacing.
The Reception: The Lowest Point
Released by Dimension Films in April 2013, Scary Movie 5 was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews.
And for the first time, audiences didn’t fully show up either. The film grossed $78.4 million worldwide, making it the lowest-performing entry in the series by a wide margin.
After years of success, the formula had finally broken.
The Legacy: A Franchise in Limbo
Scary Movie 5 effectively put the franchise on ice.
Without its original creative voices, without its iconic characters, and without a clear comedic identity, the series had nowhere left to go. It wasn’t just a bad sequel — it was a reset that removed everything people were attached to.
The good news? The series isn’t dead forever. A new installment, Scary Movie, is set to bring back the Wayans brothers — the very people who made the original work in the first place.
Final Verdict: The Worst of the Bunch
There’s no real way around it: Scary Movie 5 is the weakest entry in the entire franchise.
It’s not just that it’s unfunny — it’s that it feels disconnected from everything that came before. By removing Cindy and Brenda and replacing them with a generic cast and hollow references, the film loses its identity completely.
Where earlier films were messy but memorable, this one is simply forgettable.
For Scary Movie Tuesdays, it might be worth watching once… if only to appreciate how important those original elements really were.
