Makara Saṅkrānti — A Solar and Harvest Utsav

A Surya-Parva of Uttarāyaṇa, Agrarian Wisdom, and Civilisational Sustainability

🌞🪁 मकरसंक्रमणउत्सवस्य शुभाशयाः॥ Subha Makar Sankranti 🌻🌾

On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti — the great Sūrya-Parva marking the Sun’s northward journey (Uttarāyaṇa) and the rhythm of harvest across the Bhāratīya subcontinent — may Sūrya Deva, the visible embodiment of Ṛta (cosmic order and rhythm), continue to bestow His Kṛpā (divine grace).

As the Sun ascends, may we too align our lives with Svadharma (one’s own righteous duty), strive towards the balanced pursuit of the Puruṣārthas — Dharma (righteousness and moral duty), Artha (material and economic well-being), Kāma (love, care, pleasure, and psychological fulfilment), and Mokṣa (liberation, spiritual wisdom, and self-actualisation), while consciously fulfilling our Pañca Ṛṇas to Deva (the divine forces), Ṛṣi (gurus and knowledge traditions), Pitṛ (ancestors), Manuṣya (human civilisation), and Bhūta (nature and all living beings).

May this solar transition remind us that sustainability, prosperity, and lōkahita (collective well-being) arise from living in harmony with Ṛta — the cosmic order that binds humans, nature, śakti, and consciousness into one civilisational continuum and saṃsāra.

Celebrated across the Indian subcontinent under diverse regional traditions — Bhogi, Bihu, Dahi Chura, Khichdi Parv, Lohri, Maghi, Pongal, Pusna, Sakraat, Suggi Habba, Uttarayan, and more — Makar Sankranti affirms India’s living solar, agrarian, and ecological wisdom.

🌞🪁 Sūryāya namaḥ | Ṛtaṁ carāmaḥ 🌻🌾 Salutations to Sūrya Deva (the Sun God). May we live in harmony with Ṛta.

Alt Text (Visual/Image Description) *—* A square poster celebrating Makar Sankranti in a traditional Indian miniature painting style. At the centre of the image is a large, ornate, three-tiered kite decorated with colourful borders and tassels. The middle section of the kite bears the Hindi text “मकर संक्रांति” (Makar Sankranti). The top section depicts a family engaged in harvest-related activities and kite flying, symbolising agrarian life and community celebration of the solar and harvest festival. The bottom section shows a woman harvesting crops, representing agricultural labour and abundance. On the left side of the poster, a painting shows a traditionally dressed Lord Krishna and Mata Rukmini seated on a terrace, flying kites together under a soft sky. On the right side, Lord Krishna, depicted in blue skin with yellow garments and a crown, is shown joyfully flying a kite. Several kites are visible in the sky, along with the Sun, reinforcing the solar theme. At the top of the poster, the text reads “Subha Makara Saṅkrānti,” flanked by the logos of The Sangyan and Prakalp Drishtant. At the bottom is the Sanskrit verse, “**उदु त्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः। दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यम् ॥ ~ Ṛgveda 1.50.1. Udityaṁ jātavedasaṁ devaṁ vahanti ketavaḥ. Dṛśe viśvāya sūryaṁ. Radiant rays (ketavaḥ) uplift the brilliant, all-knowing Sun God (Jātavedasaṁ devaṁ) to manifest for the sight (dṛśe) of the entire universe (viśvāya). The overall composition symbolises Ṛta (cosmic order), harvest, solar movement, and civilisational continuity. At the bottom are the following hashtags: #BhāratīyaHarvestUtsav, #BhāratKeParv, and #IndianSolarFestival.
