1992 — Hurricane Andrew

It was the Costliest Tropical Cyclone at the Time

On August 16, 1992, Hurricane Andrew unleashed its first gusts.

At the time, it was the costliest tropical cyclone on record and the most intense to hit Florida.

Andrew was born of a tropical wave on the west coast of Africa. It gained in intensity as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

It reached hurricane status almost 1 week later, on August 22.

From then on, everything accelerated, and in just 24 hours it became a category 5 hurricane.

Winds were recorded at over 280 km/h (175 mph) and its lowest pressure at 922 hPa.

It will make landfall in two main places on August 24: The Bahamas and Florida

  • $61 billion (2025 USD)
  • 65 fatalities

Andrew weakened rapidly as it turned to the north, dropping to tropical storm intensity the same day before coming to a definitive end on August 29.
