Google just rewired how tagging works forever

Google Tag Manager and the Google tag are merging into one. Visual tagging is here. The interface is being overhauled. Here’s everything marketers and analysts need to know — and what to do next.

The Big Picture

Why this update matters

If you run any digital marketing — paid search, performance campaigns, e-commerce tracking — you rely on tags. Tags are what let Google Ads know a purchase happened, what tell GA4 someone viewed your pricing page, what fire your remarketing pixels.

For years, Google had two separate systems doing overlapping jobs: the Google tag (formerly gtag.js) and Google Tag Manager (GTM). One was for developers who liked code. One was for marketers who liked interfaces. They coexisted, often awkwardly.

That era is ending. Google has announced a sweeping update — a unification of both platforms, a redesigned interface, and a genuinely new capability called visual tagging. Let’s break down all three.

Update 1 of 3

A cleaner, smarter interface

GTM’s Overview page is getting a significant redesign. The goal: make it easier for both new users and power advertisers to navigate their setup without drowning in tabs.

Important (no features removed): This is a visual reorganization, not a removal. Everything you currently use remains available — it’s just better organized. Think of it as a desk cleanup, not a desk replacement.

Update 2 of 3 · The Big One

Google tag + GTM = one unified platform

This is the most significant change. Websites that use only the Google tag (gtag.js) — without GTM — will now be upgraded to full GTM containers. They’ll gain access to GTM’s debugging tools, version control, and interface-driven tagging — without any change to on-page behavior.

Performance improvement:

What happens to your existing GTM setup?

Nothing changes automatically. Existing GTM users will see an optimization banner prompting them to upgrade. You can preview all changes before publishing. Opting in brings three benefits:

Technical note for developers: New deployment snippets will no longer include the gtag config command. Google recommends configuring initialization behavior using the new gtm init trigger. If you need to preserve legacy behavior, the init trigger can be configured to wait for the config command.

Update 3 of 3

Visual tagging — no code, no excuses (Beta)

This one is a game-changer for non-technical marketers. Visual tagging lets you click elements directly on your website to define events and set up conversions — without writing a single line of code. The system handles selectors, triggers, and technical configurations in the background.

Currently available: Visual tagging is in beta for purchase conversions in Google Ads. Google will progressively expand it to additional use cases throughout 2026. Keep an eye on GTM release notes.

Think about what this unlocks for lean marketing teams. A growth marketer can now set up conversion tracking for a new landing page without waiting for a developer sprint. A performance analyst can add micro-conversion events for a product test without touching code. This is the democratization of tagging infrastructure.

Your Action Plan

What should you do right now?

“The era of “I’ll ask the developer to add that tag” is ending. Visual tagging, unified snippets, and a cleaner interface signal Google’s bet: measurement should be accessible to everyone on the marketing team — not just the engineers.
