The Kindness of Being Seen

Sometimes a small gesture can make a long journey feel lighter.

As we prepared to board our flight to Japan, something small happened.

The airline crew approached us and invited us to board before the other passengers.

Perhaps they saw Renata.

Perhaps they assumed she might need a little extra time.

I do not know exactly what they were thinking.

But I remember feeling pleasantly surprised.

It was not a grand gesture.

We still boarded the same plane.

Sat in the same seats.

Arrived at the same destination.

Nothing about the trip itself changed.

And yet, something did.

For a brief moment, I felt seen.

Not because someone gave us special treatment.

But because someone noticed.

In a busy airport, surrounded by hundreds of travelers, it would have been easy for us to become just another family in the crowd.

Instead, someone paid attention.

Someone thought, “Let’s make this a little easier for them.”

I think that is why small acts of kindness stay with us.

Not because they are large.

But because they remind us that people are paying attention.

That we are not completely invisible to one another.

The crew member may not remember that moment.

For them, it was probably just part of their workday.

One small action among many.

But for me, it became one of the memories I carried home.

Perhaps kindness is often like that.

A few extra seconds.

A little consideration.

A small effort that costs almost nothing.

Yet leaves someone feeling lighter.

Note to self

Sometimes the greatest gift is not help.

Sometimes it is simply being seen.
