THE NOVA KNICKS ARE EVERYTHING WE WANTED AND MORE

The 2017 Villanova Wildcats featured four future NBA players who are now playing a significant role in the creation of a Knicks team that is now heading to Madison Square Garden with 2–0 lead against the title-favourite Boston Celtics. That year, one of these four, Josh Hart, would be drafted by the Utah Jazz and traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Wildcats would go on to win the 2018 NCAA Championship, with Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Donte Divincenzo being part of this legendary squad. The three of them would all go on to be drafted in the 2018 NBA draft.
In 2022, the Knicks would sign Jalen Brunson who would go on to have a breakout season as the first option for the Knicks. Midway through that season, they would trade to acquire Josh Hart, the first of the four to get drafted. The next offseason, they would sign Donte to a four-year $50 million dollar contract. They would complete the reunion of the four Wildcats, seven years since they last played together, following a blockbuster trade that saw Mikal traded to the Knicks in a deal worth 5 first-round picks along with a multitude of other assets. A trade which, at the time, was heavily scrutinised. This reunion, however, would only last a few months, as soon after, the Knicks would be involved in another headline trade that saw Donte sent to the Timberwolves alongside Julius Randle in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. So the Knicks headed into the 2024 season with three of the 2017 Villanova wildcats, along with KAT and OG Anunoby who was acquired in a trade during the 2023–24 season. The Nova Knicks were born.
Immediately, expectations were high. This team was stacked and prior to the Cavs unexpected rise, they were considered by many to be the second-best team in the East this season. By the All-star break, the team was clicking. They were the third seed with a 36–18 record, with Jalen Brunson and KAT both being named as All-star starters. There was, however, one concern for the Knicks through the season, and that was their ability to compete with top-end teams. The Knicks were one of nine teams to have fifty wins this season, however, they had a record of 4–15 when they played the other eight teams. That was enough to raise some warning signs heading into the playoffs. Another concern for the Knicks, was Thibs’ overreliance on his starting line-up. By the end of the season, other than KAT, the Knicks starting lineup would each have 10 games or more of at least 40 minutes played, averaging 35 or more minutes a game. Josh and Mikal would, in fact, average 37 minutes per game and have over 20 games of at least 40 minutes played. The Knicks durability in the playoffs, where the intensity almost doubles, was now a major question mark.
The Nova Knicks would however squash those concerns as soon as the playoffs began. Jalen Brunson once again switched to playoff mode, averaging 31.5 points and 8.2 assists, to lead the Knicks past a pesky Pistons team. Now in the second round, Mikal Bridges has won the Knicks back-to-back games, with two clutch defensive plays to bring us to where we stand currently. Josh Hart has also carried over his amazing regular season form into the post-season, averaging 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists on 44% three-point shooting through the first 8 games of the playoffs, while playing great defense. The Nova Knicks have arrived, and under Thib’s leadership, the Knicks embraced a demanding minutes rotation, emphasising effort and discipline. This approach, while rigorous, cultivated a resilient team culture. The players’ commitment to Thibodeau’s system was evident in their ability to overcome adversity, such as back-to-back 20-point comebacks against the Celtics in these playoffs.
They are exciting, they embrace the culture in the Big Apple, they have kept the Knicks winning, and they are more than we could have wanted.
