Video Game Sales Analysis Dashboard
How the evolution of platforms, genres, and publishers shaped the gaming industry — visualised with Tableau.
Introduction
Video games are not just entertainment — they reflect culture, technology, and market shifts. Over the decades, certain platforms and publishers have dominated while new genres have risen to popularity. To better understand these shifts, I built a Tableau dashboard that summarises decades of video game sales in a single, compact view.
This dashboard highlights overall sales performance, platform dominance, genre popularity, and top-selling publishers. It provides a storytelling lens into how the industry evolved.
About the Data
The dataset contains a list of video games with sales greater than 100,000 copies, originally scraped from vgchartz.com.
It includes the following fields:
- Rank — Overall sales ranking
- Name — Game title
- Platform — Platform of release (e.g. PC, PS4, X360)
- Year — Release year
- Genre — Genre classification
- Publisher — Publishing company
- NA_Sales, EU_Sales, JP_Sales, Other_Sales — Regional unit sales (in millions)
- Global_Sales — Total worldwide sales (sum of all regions)
⚡ Note: Because this dataset only tracks games with more than 100,000 copies sold, it focuses on successful titles and excludes smaller indie or niche releases.
Dashboard Overview & Process
- Data preparation
- Connected the dataset in Tableau.
- Verified data types (year as date/number, sales as numeric).
- Filtered out rows with missing values.
2. Core calculations
- Built a Decade field for grouping years (1980s, 1990s, etc.).
- Counted unique games using COUNTD([Name]).
3. Worksheet Design
- KPIs: Unique games, global sales, regional breakdowns
- Trend line: Global sales over time by region
- Genre bar chart: Ranking of genres by total sales
- Platform treemap: Market share by console
- Table: Best-selling games with publisher and platform
- Publisher chart: Top 10 publishers by sales
- Dashboard assembly
- Placed KPIs at the top for quick insights.
- Arranged charts into three columns for balance.
- Added tooltips and formatted numbers for readability.
- Applied a consistent dark theme with accent colours for highlights.

Visual Breakdown & Interpretation
🧭 KPIs
Large, bold metrics show number of unique games tracked, total global sales, plus breakdowns by region. This gives immediate context and scale.

📈 Sales Trend Over the Years
The line chart visualizes how global video game sales rose (or dipped) across decades in each region. Spikes correspond to console generations (e.g. PS2 era, rise of handhelds, modern consoles).

🎮 Sales by Genre
Sorted bars display which genres drove the most sales. Action and Sports often dominate, while niche genres (Puzzle, Strategy) remain modest but stable.

🕹 Platform Market Share (Treemap)
Each rectangle represents a platform sized by its total sales. Tooltips help compare exact values. The PS2 stands out as a historic leader, while platforms like Wii, DS, and X360 also claim significant space.

🏆 Best-Selling Games Table
This table lists blockbuster games along with their publisher and platform. Highlighted sales values make it easy to spot mega-hits like New Super Mario Bros. or Call of Duty: Black Ops.

🏢 Top 10 Publishers
A bar chart reveals which publishers control the most global sales. You’ll spot that a few major players account for a large share, illustrating market concentration.

Key Insights & Takeaways
- Generational dominance shifts: Platforms enjoy periods of dominance, but no single platform reigns forever.
- Genre consistency: Action and Sports titles frequently top the charts, showing reliable consumer demand.
- Publisher concentration: A small group of publishers control a large portion of game sales — challenging terrain for newcomers.
- Regional differences: Demand varies by geography, reinforcing the importance of regional strategies (e.g. Japan’s preference for certain genres).
Final Thoughts
Creating this dashboard reminded me that video games are more than numbers — they’re a reflection of the times we live in. Each console generation represents not just technology, but memories of childhood, friendships, and cultural moments. Looking at the data is like reliving gaming history, one chart at a time.
