The Final Chapter — Bowls That Built a Life

Four colors, decades of memories, and the kitchen tool that matters more to me than all the rest

Today is the final chapter of this series, and this last one is something very personal. It’s not something you can buy on Amazon or pick up at a department store (though you might stumble across a set on eBay if the stars align). The final kitchen tool I want to share is a set of Pyrex bowls from my mom’s kitchen.

I don’t know their exact age, but they lived on the pantry shelf when I was just a young thing. I won’t reveal my actual age, but let’s just say I was alive during the Eisenhower administration. These bowls have been with me for as long as I can remember and have travelled with me to six homes.

There are four bowls:

• The yellow bowl — the largest, big enough to handle almost any mixing challenge.
• The green bowl — perfect for pie crusts and cookie dough.
• The red bowl — the middle child of the set. Too big for sauces, too small for crusts, often overlooked. Poor red bowl.
• The blue bowl — my go‑to for sauces, dessert crumbles, or a one‑person tuna or chicken salad.

These bowls aren’t just tools. They’re the sound of my mother’s kitchen, the memory of family meals, the reassurance of something that has always been there and still works exactly as it should.

So I’ll end this series with a question for you:

Is there a tool you remember from your childhood — something your mom or grandmother used — that you wish you had today? Or maybe you were lucky enough to have it passed down to you.

Thank you for coming along with me on this little journey through “A Few of My Favorite Things.” What started as a short‑lived idea turned into a surprisingly joyful walk through the tools, gadgets, and hand‑me‑downs that make my kitchen feel like mine.

Some were humble. I’d like to think that most (if not all) were practical. A few were perhaps a bit quirky. And one — that set of Pyrex bowls — carries decades of memories.

I’ve loved sharing these with you. Truly.
