A Poet’s Mind in a Linebacker’s Body

All my life I’ve lived inside a paradox: a poet’s mind in a linebacker’s body. The world measured the size, the tackles, the 40-yard dash. But in my notebooks, I was already carving lines of fire.

I grew up in New England, Catholic discipline and family grit, where football became my first forge. At Hofstra University I played outside linebacker, 6’2” and 245 pounds, part of the last generation before the program was shut down. The field taught me resilience, pressure, the poetry of collisions. It was theater with helmets. I still remember the sound of helmets colliding under Hofstra’s indoor practice lights . The same sound I later felt in applause on a set.

After Hofstra, Washington called. I moved into politics, interning at the RNC, then working on Senator Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign. Campaign buses, late-night strategy sessions, slogans rising like chants in a stadium. Another kind of playbook. Another field of collisions. There I learned: power is performance, and performance demands truth.

Hollywood came next. Soap operas (General Hospital). Marvel soundstages (Captain America: The First Avenger). Indie satire (Kim Jong Kill). Each role a drill, each set another rep. Daytime taught me speed. Marvel taught me scale. Indie film taught me risk. Presence under pressure, the same discipline I once carried onto the field.

Then the words took flame. Satirical thunder in Ode to the Capitalist Circus. Prophetic cadence in poems of Ireland’s grief and America’s covenant. A voice living between satire and scripture, between satirist and prophet. Where the linebacker’s discipline meets the poet’s fire.

That duality is not contradiction. It is covenant. The same shoulders that carried pads carry words now. The same lungs that shouted across scrimmages shout rhythm on the page. Acting gave me craft. Politics gave me context. Football gave me grit. Poetry gave me fire. Together, they gave me the PoetKing.

The story is not scheduled like commerce. It is revealed like scripture… in fire, in rhythm, in covenant.
