A Guide to Mounting and Unmounting in Linux

Mounting
Create a File System: You’ll need to format the new volume with a file system. Most commonly, ext4 is used:
sudo mkfs -t ext4 /dev/xvdbb

Mount the File System: Create a mount point and then mount the file system:
sudo mkdir /mnt/new_mountpoint
sudo mount /dev/xvdbb /mnt/new_mountpoint

Update fstab for Automatic Mounting: To ensure the volume mounts automatically on reboot, you need to add it to the /etc/fstab file. First, get the UUID of the new volume:
sudo blkid /dev/xvdbb
Verify the Mount: Verify that the volume is mounted correctly:
df -h
Unmounting
Unmount the Volume:
sudo umount /mnt/newvolume
Error usually occurs when there are active processes using the mountpoint.

Here are steps to unmount it successfully:
Find the Busy Processes: Use the lsof (List Open Files) command to see which processes are using the mountpoint.
sudo lsof /mnt/newvolume

Terminate the Processes: Once you identify the processes, you can terminate them using the kill command. Replace <PID> with the actual Process ID.
sudo kill -9 <PID>
Retry Unmounting: After terminating the processes, try unmounting again.
sudo umount /mnt/newvolume
If you still encounter issues, you can use the fuser command to forcefully unmount:
sudo fuser -vm /mnt/newvolume
sudo umount -l /mnt/newvolume
