A decade of evolution in strength and leadership

May 30th was the sad one-year anniversary of the death of Loretta Swit, actress best known as “Hotlips” Major Margaret Houlihan on MASH.* Swit was one of four actors who were on the series for eleven seasons, the others were Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, and William Christopher. Swit passed away from natural causes in her home at eighty-seven.
Swit kept busy after MASH ended, with visits to The Love Boat and other series, including game shows. She was also busy with voice-over work, theater productions, and hosting Those Incredible Animals on Discovery Channel. But her claim to fame has always been MASH, where she received two Emmy Awards.

Through MASH’s *seasons, Margaret evolved and became a complex character on the show. She began as a young wagon-hitcher and became a mature leader. Her name “Hotlips” came from an embarrassing prank the doctors played on her. They put a microphone in her bed and amplified her bedroom conversation so all 4077 could hear. Hotlips and Frank are victims of severe bullying at the hands of Hawkeye, yet they endured. You could say they were two ships keeping each other company.
From the very start, the audience knew Margaret was so much better than old “Ferret-Face” Frank Burns. She lost her “Hotlips” nickname somewhere in between, becoming a strong woman who had lost so much during her service in the war. As a major and head nurse, she was intelligent, strong, and resilient. She was hard when she had to be, but she was kind and soft underneath.
Margaret Houlihan was all woman. In a war zone full of people struggling to survive, Margaret found joy. She found peace in the rules and order. She found love in the midst of war and then loss.
One of my favorite episodes with Margaret was when she broke up with Frank Burns, and he went AWOL. She got drunk with Hawkeye and BJ. Later, she says, “I’m not as thunk as you drink I am.”
Swit also gave Margaret room to grow. She overcame Frank Burns, the war, divorce, and being a woman in a man’ssssss world. She grew her own set of rules and values as she evolved into a highly complex character.
In a great episode, Max Klinger lost her wedding ring, inscribed with “Over hill, over dale our love will never fail.” Margaret went on a rampage over the lost ring. As the episode goes on, he finds a man who can make a ring and inscribe it. He pays to have the ring custom-made, hoping to make Margaret happy. Klinger tells Margaret he has found the lost ring.
Margaret is excited to get her ring back. She reads the inscription inside: “Over hill, over dale our love will ever fail.”
Margaret screams at Klinger in anger. “Where is the ’n’ Klinger?… Over hill, over dale, our love will ever fail. Where’s the ’n’?” she yells. Eventually, she realizes she treated Klinger like dirt and apologizes for her behavior.
As we see her come to acceptance of her lost ring, she realizes so many other things have been lost during this horrible war. Her youth, her friends, and her innocence. She realizes she is also lost. The audience realizes her wartime marriage is as doomed as the inscription on the ring.
Loretta Swit moved us all as Margaret, from her crazy rampages to her lonely cries of not being accepted by the other nurses. She gave Hotlips spunk, passion, and joy. Her arc makes MASH *worth watching again and again.
