Masdar’s Green Energy Expansion in Azerbaijan: A Milestone for Sustainable Development

Abu Dhabi’s state-owned renewable energy firm, Masdar, has taken a significant step towards advancing green energy by signing agreements with Azerbaijan’s state oil firm, Socar. This collaboration will see the construction of two solar plants and a wind farm with a combined capacity of 1 gigawatt. The projects, including the 445 MW Bilasuvar Solar PV, 315 MW Neftchala Solar PV, and 240 MW Absheron-Garadagh Onshore Wind, are set to be operational by 2027. This initiative underscores the UAE’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and enhancing green growth globally.

The announcement comes as Baku prepares to host the COP29 climate summit, highlighting Azerbaijan’s role in the global transition towards renewable energy. Masdar’s head of development, Maryam Al Mazrouei, emphasized the strategic partnership, with Masdar holding a 75% stake in the projects. COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber reiterated the UAE’s dedication to climate action, announcing that the UAE climate fund Alterra aims to raise over $200 billion in investments over the next six years. This collaboration is a testament to the UAE’s leadership in fostering international partnerships for a sustainable future.
