Three Wishes Before I Fade Away Chapter 01
Five years after Katherine Breton’s death, her husband, Terrence Harward, decided to remarry.
But every engagement party he held — three in total — was cut short by an unexpected accident.
The first ended in a fire. At the second, a car crashed through the venue. And the third? A crystal chandelier came crashing down onto the banquet floor.
Desperate and out of options, his parents brought in a psychic.
The man’s professional conclusion was that Terrence’s late wife, Katherine, was lingering as a ghost, refusing to move on.
—
In the courtyard of the Harward’s mansion in Boston, Katherine’s portrait sat in the center of a table.
Katherine, now a ghost hovering above, watched it all and found it utterly ridiculous.
She had merely been observing; she never imagined they’d actually blame her for the ruined parties.
She drifted down next to Terrence, offering a helpless defense. “This guy’s a total fraud. Your problems have absolutely nothing to do with me. Marry whoever you want — I honestly don’t care.”
Five years ago, she had even had their divorce papers drawn up.
She just happened to die before they could finalize the split, which she felt was a real pity.
Worse, ever since, she’d been trapped in the house, a bound soul unable to cross the property line.
Of course, nobody could hear her.
Standing nearby, Terrence’s parents, Jimmy and Clarissa Harward, were fuming. “We’re so unlucky to have crossed paths with that jinx, Katherine,” Clarissa snapped, “She was a nuisance when she was alive, and she’s still causing trouble even in death.”
Terrence remained unmoved by those words.
He glanced at the psychic, Peter Merrill, then at Katherine’s photo, and let out a scoff. “Mr. Merrill, since my late wife refuses to leave, what must I do so that my wedding can finally proceed?”
Katherine’s soul trembled, convinced he meant to destroy her.
“Terrence, I was your wife! You’re being way too cruel.”
Peter answered with unshakable confidence.
“You have to fulfill three of her final wishes. Only then will she release her grip on this world and depart in peace. Once she is gone, your engagement will proceed without further incident.”
Terrence looked up, a faint edge of mockery in his voice. “And how am I supposed to know what her final wishes were?”
Peter replied solemnly, “I can perform a ritual to reach her soul. You will see her and learn her wishes yourself.”
Terrence paused, as if Peter had just told a terrible joke.
“In five years, she hasn’t so much as shown up in my dreams. You really think you can help me see her?”
Hearing that, Katherine went quiet.
It was true — she hadn’t visited his dreams once since she died.
But then again, when she was bleeding out on the operating table in labor, he hadn’t come to see her either.
Peter just smiled. “We won’t know until we try, will we?”
Terrence chewed on that for a second before his tone turned serious. “Fine. What do we do?”
Katherine burst out laughing.
“Terrence, you’re a doctor. You trust science more than anyone. Are you really going to listen to this fraud?”
Right on cue, Peter pulled a candle from his sleeve and set it on the table.
“When lit, this special candle produces a unique scent that bridges the gap between the living and the dead. I brought the candle, but to make contact, we also need an item that carries the scent of the deceased.”
Katherine raised an eyebrow.
Right after she died, the Harwards got rid of every single thing she owned. How could Terrence possibly still have anything of hers?
The thought had barely crossed her mind when Terrence casually pulled a beaded bracelet from his bre@st pocket.
“Will this work?”
Katherine stared at the bracelet, totally stunned.
She distinctly remembered breaking it before the ambulance took her to the hospital. The beads had scattered all over the floor.
It should have been ruined. How was it sitting perfectly intact in Terrence’s hand right now?
Peter took the bracelet with a nod. Then, he pulled out a dagger and held it out to Terrence.
“Mr. Harward, now drip your blood into the candle.”
Terrence took the dagger and stared at it without a word. His gaze was dark and unreadable; no one could discern his true thoughts.
A moment later, he sliced open his fingertip. Drops of blood fell into the candle, pooling darkly on the pale wax.
Almost immediately, the special candle flared to life.
Thick white sm0ke hung in the room.
As it finally cleared, Katherine looked at Terrence and gave a tentative wave in front of his eyes.
“Terrence?”
He didn’t flinch. He just stood there, staring blankly ahead.
“Looks like that psychic really is a fraud,” she muttered. “So even you fall for scams, huh?”
Sighing, Katherine turned to float away.
Just then, Terrence’s hands shot out, as if to pull her back.
She stopped, looked back, and saw his hand slipping right through her.
But as she looked closer, she realized his eyes were locked on her.
Terrence finally spoke, his voice hoarse and trembling.
“Katherine? Is that really you?”
