One morning, they found old inky-eyed resting beside the dumpster behind Moorcock’s establishment, his W-shaped pupils staring unflinchingly at eternity amidst a cloud of green bottle flies.

His lithe tentacles were splayed in a flaccid caricature of an embrace, never again to pleasure the unsuspecting flesh of nightclub-frequenting females with the caress unique to a gene-modified headfooter.

Some said it was fate, others a jealous boyfriend’s stranglehold, but the wisened bar manager claimed it was just retirement. Over a midnight pint of Guinness, the latter explained that Mister Persistence’s soul was dancing at the ends of Time with all the women whose thighs he had marked.

I always took the view it was simply an interchange of generations, as the Massive Eugenics van, a mere week later, dropped off a baby cephalopod, wide-pupilled and clingy.
