Are You Taking The Right Posture?
Over the last few days, I've thought a lot about my medium. The number of essays. The amount of time and energy invested. The people I've met. The collaborative opportunities it opened.
I've tried to tally the returns to the effort. Has it given me more than I've invested?
I've been asking myself: was it worth all the obsession?
Yes, it has given me enough activation energy — from the growth feedback— and confidence to want to make a dent in other places, but I still think if I could have gotten more out of it.
A lot of people think I'm too sure of my choices, and that is true in a way— that I know that what I'm doing has a huge impact on my future— but I like to remain open. I like to still poke to see whether anything I do is worth it.
Why? Because I never want to assume the posture of a know-it-all. I want to stay open to possibilities, to other ideas and perspectives. I don't want to be rigid in my method of thinking and execution because then, my emotions will take the front seat and logic, the back.
My interest is beginning to be heavy in other places. Other platforms. Other opportunities. But my heart is still here. I love to write. I could do this for the rest of my life.
However, whenever I start to feel uncomfortable like this, I know I have to move. I'm starting to grow out of only posting my ideas to sharpening and distribution them all over the place. I'm becoming more aware of the need to take up more space.
If I want to be honest with myself, I've become too comfortable with this corner of the internet. I've been a little guilty of not letting myself fully blossom. I've stuck to the minor discomfort— publishing essays, enjoying other people's work and making new friends— here a little too long that it has become comfortable. I think in trying to play big, I played small. But that was all false discomfort.
The core of my intuition has been uneasy for a while now. I need to stretch my wings wider.
My friend, George, just sent me a voice note and he confirmed my suspicion. We know too much to not aim for global impact now. Minimizing our reach wouldn't only hold us back but affect the lives we can be able to touch. What excuse then will we give to God for not using the wealth in us?
My initial plan was to reach 500 published essays. To develop my ideas more. But I think that's just over-preparation talking.
I can already start with the little I have. With the little results and feedback I've gotten.
Starting from now, I'm going to take crazy steps towards the 5-year visions I have. I have to be as wild as a bull. Attacking every limitation with the same brute force as I do with strategy. Because maybe I've become too comfortable with my wit.
I'm only going to be doing what has the highest possible returns for me. No little projects. No small moves. Nothing small. I think I made that decision even before I realized it. It's no wonder I've been irritated with the concept of little money these says. In a chanced meeting with Adulrazaq yesterday, I told him I'd rather not work than work for small money. That way, I'll conserve my energy and aim for something bigger, or create it. Because when I do something, I like to do it like it's the last thing in my life. I should be rewarded in that manner.
The world has changed massively. The maximizers are getting more out of it than those doing the barest minimums.
In the next decade, we'll see a wave of new faces with new ideas and new empires— I won't be left behind. And like my friend George said, we all look like we're on the same field but we're not. People are already positioning themselves. They're already taking the right posture.
