I can hardly contain my excitement at the thought of witnessing such an incredible masterpiece intricately carved into the rock — it’s sure to be breathtaking!

The Crazy Horse monument is 17 miles from Mount Rushmore and is perfect for visiting both on the same trip on the same day, as you only need a few hours at most at each site.

When will it be completed?

The Crazy Horse Memorial is completely funded by visitors to the memorial, and without everyone’s support, it will never progress or be finished!

I have visited the monument twice, hoping to witness its completion.

The History of Carving:

In 1948, the visionary sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski embarked on a monumental journey to carve the image of the legendary warrior Crazy Horse on horseback from the heart of the Black Hills in South Dakota. Once completed, this awe-inspiring project will be an astonishing 641 feet long and soar to a breathtaking height of 563 feet, reminding us all of the enduring spirit of strength and courage that Crazy Horse embodies.

Crazy Horse, the largest mountain carving on Earth, stands in the breathtaking Black Hills of South Dakota. It is revered as one of the Eighth Wonders of the World.

After Korczak died in the late 1980s, his wife, Ruth, directed his progressing sculpture.

The Crazy Horse Monument is far from completion because of its immense size, the hardness of the mountain’s rock (high iron content), the complex carving process requiring careful engineering and explosives, and the fact that donations entirely fund the project.

Progress is largely dependent on available funds, which contributes to a very slow pace of work.

His courageous participation in the legendary battles of the Black Hills War on the northern Great Plains, including the bold Fetterman Fight in 1866 — where he skillfully acted as a decoy — and the iconic Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 — where he led his war party to a resounding victory — earned him profound respect from both his adversaries and his people.
