Purity Navy Strength Gin

And last but not least in the Purity distillery series is their navy strength gin. I have really enjoyed this distillery a lot more than I thought I would, but with their extremely reasonable price point, I doubt that this will be the last time I drink them.

For those of you who are newer to gin, or even like normal abv gin, you might be shaking your head wondering why anyone would want to drink gin 57% or up. The origins of this style are hotly debated but they follow a similar theme. The first is that sailors in the navy used to transport loads of gin and loads of gunpowder. At 57% the spirit is flammable, so they needed to make sure that if the gin leaked and made the gunpowder wet, it would still be able to light.

The second and the one I was taught during my alcohol adolescence was that sailors used to be paid in gin and to make sure it wasn’t watered down and was worth its value, it needed to be able to light to prove that it was strong.

Whichever one is true, we are no longer sailors and while I still sort of am, the vast majority of you are not being paid in free gin or have access to copious amounts of gunpowder. The more modern answer is that navy strength gin stands up better in cocktails and cuts through strong flavors without losing its intricacies. Let’s see how this expression from Purity does.

On the nose, you can definitely feel your nostril hair singe with alcohol heat and strong juniper. There is the nice berry fruitiness that is present in their other gin styles but not as prominently. The floral lavender and herbal thyme and juniper take center stage here and stomp anything in its path.

Not a martini gin and I feel it works a little bitter in sweeter cocktails to calm some of the harsher elements. I love gin and soda but this might not be the one for that. In a bramble though? Heavenly. It’s the most expensive out of their range but it is worth it.
