Creating a Vocabulary Flashcard Game with AI

And Somehow Ending Up Talking About Anime and Quantum Mechanics

I’ve been using Gemini to help me with my studies at the Open University of Japan.

That said, studying itself is more like a hobby for me. I tend to follow whatever catches my interest and sample a little bit of everything.

I had hoped that having AI help me explore everyday questions about topics like relativity and quantum mechanics would allow me to truly master them. But in the end, my own abilities set the limit, don’t they?

Trying to leap straight to the finish line was a rather reckless attempt. 💦

So I’ve decided to take things slowly and enjoy the journey at a more relaxed pace (lesson learned!).

Now, on to the main topic of this post.

I’ve always enjoyed studying English and have been using online flashcard services such as Quizlet for many years.

Unfortunately, this site eventually became a paid service. It’s still usable if you’re willing to put up with the usage limits, but paying just to use decks that I created myself somehow reduced my motivation to keep using the platform.

Still, knowing that other people could access and use the decks I had created through a paid service left me with mixed feelings, and my use of Quizlet gradually dropped off.

Recently, however, I visited the site again for the first time in quite a while. I noticed that the usage restrictions seemed to have changed, and more importantly, the game mode had been redesigned with a surprisingly nice user interface.

Seeing that made me wish I could use it as freely as before.

Then it suddenly occurred to me: if Gemini is so good at coding, why not ask it to help me create my own flashcard app?

So I immediately started experimenting with various ideas.

And, as expected, it’s incredibly capable! The progress AI makes day by day is truly impressive.
