“ Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”: What Comes After it?

“Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” a slogan we’ve all heard, repeated in campaigns, classrooms, and conversations. It carries hope. It carries intention. It tells us that daughters deserve to live, to learn, to grow. But somewhere along the way, we stopped asking a very important question:

What happens after “Padhao”?

Yes, today more families are sending their daughters to school. Girls are studying, scoring well, even outperforming boys in many cases, but is education truly being seen as a path to independence or just a phase before marriage?

In many homes, the story still follows a familiar pattern: Educate her.

Protect her.

And then…

marry her off.

Her degree becomes a “qualification” for a better match, not a tool for building her own life. That’s where the gap lies.

Women empowerment was never just about literacy. It was about agency. The power to choose. The freedom to decide what to do with that education whether it’s building a career, pursuing passion, supporting a family financially, or simply living life on her own terms, but when decisions are still made for her rather than by her, can we really call it empowerment?

The truth is uncomfortable:

Society celebrates educated daughters, but often hesitates when those same daughters choose ambition over tradition, independence over approval, or career over early marriage.

We don’t just need to teach our daughters we need to trust them with their own futures.

Parents play a huge role here. Teaching a girl doesn’t end with sending her to school or college. It continues in the way you encourage her to dream bigger, in the way you support her choices, and in the way you stand beside her when society questions those choices.

Because education without opportunity is incomplete and opportunity without support is fragile.
