Chapter 1: The Night We Met

The city at 11:47 p.m.

The city always sounded different at night.

Not quieter. Just… honest.

The traffic lost its impatience. Storefront lights flickered like tired eyes. Conversations drifted through the sidewalks in pieces, unfinished and careless. Even the rain from earlier still clung to the pavement, turning the streets into mirrors of neon and gold.

Iris Laurent pulled her jacket tighter around herself as she walked.

Her phone buzzed again in her pocket.

Probably another reminder. Another email. Another expectation.

She ignored it.

Late-night walks were the only thing that quieted her mind anymore. No classmates asking about grades. No teachers talking about college applications like they were countdown clocks. No parents reminding her that “success requires sacrifice.”

At night, the city asked nothing from her.

She turned a corner too quickly, head lowered toward the book in her hands, and slammed straight into someone.

The impact startled her enough that the book nearly slipped from her grip.

“Sorry,” she said immediately, stepping back.

A pause.

“You’re fine.”

The voice was low. Calm enough to cut through the noise around them.

Iris looked up.

And forgot how to breathe for a second.

He was taller than her by a lot, dressed in a dark hoodie under a black coat despite the humid air left behind by the rain. Sharp features. Dark eyes. The kind of face people crossed streets to avoid.

But he’d stepped back first after the collision.

Like he was making sure she had space.

His gaze flickered briefly to the book in her hands.

“Studying this late?” he asked.

Iris looked down automatically. Psychology notes. Highlighted within an inch of their life.

She resisted the urge to hide them.

“Some people enjoy having functional grades.”

One corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

Not quite a smile. More like he almost remembered how.

“Sounds exhausting.”

Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten unexpectedly.

Most people heard her sarcasm and answered with more sarcasm. But his voice carried quiet understanding instead. Like he recognized something in her he wasn’t supposed to.

Iris straightened slightly.

“And wandering around city streets at midnight isn’t exhausting?”

“No,” he said.

His eyes held hers for a moment longer than normal.

“It’s quieter here.”

The answer caught her off guard because it was exactly why she walked at night too.

For one strange second, it felt less like meeting someone and more like recognizing them.

Which made absolutely no sense.

A car sped past nearby, spraying water against the curb. Iris stepped back instinctively.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

“You should probably head home before it starts raining again,” he said.

Not controlling. Not cold.

Just careful.

And somehow that felt worse.

Because careful people were dangerous. They noticed things. They slipped past defenses before you realized they were there.

Iris tightened her grip on her book.

“Goodnight,” she said quickly.

She turned before he could answer and started walking again, faster this time.

She could feel it though.

That irritating awareness crawling up the back of her neck.

The feeling of being watched.

Not in a threatening way.

In a curious one.

When she finally glanced back, he was still standing there under the streetlight, hands in his pockets, watching her disappear into the city crowd.

Iris slept terribly.

Which was entirely his fault.

Not that she even knew his name.

She tossed around until nearly two in the morning replaying the conversation in fragments she didn’t ask for.

It’s quieter here.

God. Who even says things like that?

By the time morning arrived, she already hated him a little.

Rain tapped softly against the classroom windows as Iris walked into Advanced Literature the next day, coffee in one hand and exhaustion sitting behind her eyes.

Half the class was already there.

She barely looked up while moving toward her usual seat.

Then someone spoke from the back of the room.

“You walk fast when you’re avoiding people.”

Her steps stopped instantly.

That voice.

Slowly, Iris looked up.

And there he was.

Leaning back in his chair beside the window like he’d always belonged there.

Dark hoodie again. Sleeves pushed slightly up this time. Pen spinning lazily between his fingers.

Watching her.

The room suddenly felt too warm.

A few students nearby glanced between them with interest, sensing tension the way people sensed storms before they arrived.

Iris recovered first.

“You followed me to school?” she asked flatly.

A faint almost-smile appeared again.

“I was here first.”

Unfortunately, he had a point.

Iris stared at him for another second before sitting down two rows ahead of him.

She told herself not to turn around.

She lasted exactly forty seconds.

When she glanced back, Elias Vale was already looking at her.
