My grandmother does not know what AI stands for. But last Tuesday, she watched my little cousin ask his phone a question in Acholi — and the phone answered back. She laughed so hard she had to hold her belly. Then she leaned closer, curious, and whispered: "Ask it again."

That moment, small as it sounds, is actually a big deal. Something that used to feel like science fiction — a machine that thinks, responds, and learns — is quietly moving into African homes. Not in a loud, dramatic way. More like the way mobile money came in: slowly, then suddenly everywhere.

I am Lubz Emma, I grew up in Northern Uganda, and this is what I am seeing with my own eyes.

It Started With the Phone in Your Pocket

The smartphone was the first door AI walked through. When we in Uganda got affordable smartphones — those Tecno and Infinix phones that sell for 300,000 shillings at Gulu Main Market — we did not know we were also getting AI. But we were.

The camera that recognises faces. The keyboard that predicts your next word. The Google Maps voice that tells you to turn at the boda stage. All of that is AI. It was already living with us before we had a name for it.

Now the newer AI — the kind that can hold a full conversation, write essays, explain difficult topics, and translate languages — is starting to follow that same path. It is showing up in school bags, market stalls, and late-night study sessions.

A Night in a Northern Uganda Home

Mama is sorting groundnuts. Papa is on the veranda talking to a neighbor. But 15-year-old Lamaro is crouched under the lamp, her phone’s brightness turned all the way up, typing a question into ChatGPT.

The answer comes back in clear, simple English. She reads it twice, nods, and writes it in her exercise book with her own words. Tomorrow she will answer that question in the exam. She studied with an AI tonight and did not pay a single shilling for tutoring.

This is not unusual anymore. Across Gulu, Lira, Kitgum, and Arua, students are using AI tools to study. Teachers on modest salaries cannot always give every student extra attention. But AI can — anytime, any question, any pace.

"The teacher has 80 students in one class. AI has time for each of them individually. That gap is real, and AI is filling it quietly."

The Language Problem — and a Surprising Hope

One thing that always kept technology distant from many African families was language. Most powerful software was built in English, French, or Portuguese. If your grandmother speaks only Acholi or Lugbara or Langi, most of the internet was not really for her.

That is starting to change. AI language models are getting better at African languages. Tools like Google Translate now support Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu, Igbo, and others. Startups across the continent are training AI on local languages. Some researchers are working on Acholi and Luo datasets right now.

Is it perfect? No. Sometimes the AI translates Acholi with the clumsy confidence of a tourist who learned three phrases. But it is moving in the right direction. And for the first time, it feels like technology might actually speak to our grandmothers, not just around them.

The Market, the Farm, the Clinic

AI is not just for students. Walk through any busy Northern Uganda market — Kaunda Grounds in Gulu, Lira Central Market — and you will notice traders using smartphones in new ways.

A woman selling tomatoes uses a WhatsApp chatbot to check current market prices in Kampala before she sets her price. A young farmer in Omoro district asks an agricultural AI tool about the right time to plant during this rainy season. A boda boda rider uses Google's AI voice assistant to navigate to a new estate he has never been to.

In health, community health workers are beginning to use AI-powered symptom checkers to support their work in hard-to-reach areas. These are not replacing doctors — they are reaching people who have no doctor within 30 kilometres.

None of these people call what they are doing "using artificial intelligence." They are just solving problems. The technology is invisible to them — which, if you think about it, is exactly how good technology should work.

But Let Us Be Honest About the Challenges

I am not writing a praise song here. There are real problems we need to talk about.

Power and internet. Most of Northern Uganda still deals with unreliable electricity. Using AI tools needs data. Data needs money. Load-shedding is a real barrier. Until we solve energy poverty, AI will remain out of reach for many families.

Digital literacy. Knowing how to use AI well is a skill. Many older Ugandans, and even some young people in rural areas, do not know how to ask AI the right questions or how to recognise when it gives a wrong answer. And AI does give wrong answers sometimes — confidently, which makes it worse.

Our data, our story. Most AI systems were built with data that reflects the West — Western faces, Western languages, Western problems. An AI that does not understand the context of life in Acholi land or the challenges of a smallholder farmer in Lamwo district can give advice that is irrelevant or even harmful. We need African voices in the rooms where AI is built.

"We should not just consume AI. We should shape it, question it, and demand that it knows us — not just a version of us seen from the outside."

What Comes Next

Here is what I believe: Africa is not late to AI. We are arriving at an interesting moment — when the technology is powerful enough to be genuinely useful, but still early enough that we can influence how it grows here.

Young people across this continent are building things. In Nairobi's iHub, in Lagos, in Kampala's Kololo hill, young Africans are creating AI tools for African problems — disease detection in cassava crops, early warning systems for floods, voice tools for local languages, platforms that serve markets in remote areas.

And in my grandmother's sitting room in Northern Uganda, a phone just answered a question in Acholi. She laughed. Then she leaned in closer.

That is, honestly, the most important thing I can tell you. When our grandmothers lean closer — not in fear, but in curiosity — something good is happening. Something that belongs to us is being built.

AI is not just coming to African homes. In many ways, it is already here. The question now is: what do we do with it?
