5 Things I Never Road Trip Without Because I Learned the Hard Way

My husband and I road trip cross-country a LOT.
We travel for work for months at a time, bouncing between BLM camping, Airbnbs, decent hotels, questionable hotels, and wherever else the road takes us.
Over the years, our packing list has evolved through a highly scientific process called trial and error.
While we’re often traveling for work, we’re equally committed to pulling over for random attractions, scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, weird roadside signs, and pretty much anything that catches our ADHD attention.
Every trip teaches us something new.
These are five things that have officially earned permanent spots on my road trip roster.
Let’s hit the road. 🚗
1. Shoe & Foot Powder
because we’re all sharing the same recycled air
I’ll just say it.
My husband has stinky feet. 😂
And I am a professional lookey-loo who doesn’t always pay attention to where I’m walking and have stepped in puddles, mud, and occasionally things I’d rather not discuss. 💩
After a long hike, sightseeing adventure, or day spent wandering around outdoors, those shoes get shoved right back into the vehicle with everyone else.
That’s where this stuff comes in.
A quick sprinkle into your shoes helps keep things a little fresher and significantly reduces the chances of being trapped in a rolling box of foot funk.
If you or your travel companions suffer from cheese feet, sweaty feet, or an aggressive shoe-removal habit, I highly recommend having some of this on hand.
P.S. — I don’t think it’s offsides to sprinkle some of this into someone’s shoes without them knowing. If their shoes are off and loose in the car, it’s fair game.
2. Ginger Chews
emergency snacks for my traitorous stomach
TMI, but one of my flaws as a human is that I’m extremely motion sickness prone.
I’ve gotten sick on road trips, whale watching tours, amusement park rides, IMAX theaters… honestly, if something moves or simulates moving, there’s a chance I’ll regret it.
I’ve become much better at managing it over the years, but every now and then I’ll make the mistake of absolutely demolishing a snack, only for us to end up on a windy mountain road shortly afterward-and it’s not ideal lol.
These ginger chews don’t solve every problem, but they’ve helped me through some questionable moments when it’s already too late for Dramamine.
The flavor isn’t overly sweet, which I appreciate when I’m nauseous, and they’re individually wrapped so you’re not constantly digging your grubby little road trip hands into a communal bag.
I’m here for these.
3. Female Urination Device
one of the most underrated inventions ever
If this doesn’t apply to you, carry on.
For the girls, however…
This thing is fantastic.
Not only does it make it possible to pee into a bottle in one of those situations, but it also allows you to pee standing up in gross gas station bathrooms, questionable rest stops, music festival restrooms, and those blazing hot porta-potties that feel like tiny plastic saunas.
No awkward hovering and no praying your legs don’t give out halfway through.
No accidentally touching things you’d rather not think about.
Call it a funnel, a female urination device, a SHEiner, or whatever you want.
All I know is it has made road trips, camping, and festivals significantly easier.
Bonus: it comes with a discreet carrying case.
4. Boost Oxygen Can
aka: my “something feels off” backup plan
This one is a sleeper.
It’s marketed toward athletes, hikers, and mountaineers.
I am none of those things. 😂
I do enjoy hiking, but I also have asthma, occasionally get headaches, and sometimes anxiety decides to make an appearance when it’s least convenient.
Colorado is one of our favorite places, and we usually spend a couple of months there every year. The altitude adjustment period kicks my butt every time.
Whether we’re driving mountain roads, hiking, exploring, or simply sitting on a porch enjoying the view, there are times when I start feeling a little off.
A few breaths from one of these often help me feel better surprisingly quickly.
It has earned a permanent place in the road trip supplies.
5. Air Sanitizer
because road trip snacks leave evidence
Look.
One of the best parts of road trips is the snacks.
The open road simply hits different when accompanied by an unreasonable amount of snacks and the occasional drive-thru meal in the front seat.
But once I’m done inhaling my sandwich and fries, I don’t necessarily want to keep smelling them for the next four hours.
And let’s be honest, after enough time in the car, everyone starts getting a little musty.
Humans. Dogs. Shoes. Blankets.
The recycled air knows all.
This Lysol Air Sanitizer has become a permanent resident of our glove compartment.
I usually buy the lavender scent, but there are other options too.
I couldn’t fully explain the science behind how it sanitizes the air, but after a couple of sprays, the car smells fresh again-and that’s good enough for me.
🚗 Final Thoughts
Road trips are one of my favorite things in the world.
They’re also a good way to discover problems you never knew existed.
Luckily, they’re also a great way to discover solutions.
These are a few of the items that have survived years of cross-country drives, spontaneous detours, camping trips, roadside attractions, and questionable decisions.
If they can survive our adventures, they’ve earned their place.
I stumbled. I scored. And my shoes no longer threaten the air quality inside the vehicle.
Until next time.
