The Mineral You Cannot Live Without Is Probably Killing You Slowly
Sodium sits at the centre of a nutritional paradox that most people never fully examine. The body depends on it for survival. It regulates blood volume, transmits nerve impulses, contracts muscles, and absorbs nutrients in the small intestine. Without adequate sodium, the consequences are severe: hyponatremia causes confusion and seizures, muscle cramps, endurance collapses, and cognitive function deteriorates.
Yet the global picture reveals the opposite problem. Average daily salt consumption worldwide is 9 to 12 grams. The WHO recommends less than 5 grams. That excess is directly linked to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer. Research shows that high sodium can harm arteries, heart tissue, skin, and brain function, even independently of blood pressure. The toll is 1.89 million deaths each year attributed to excessive intake.

The difficulty lies in where sodium hides. Approximately 75% of dietary salt comes from processed foods rather than from salt added during cooking or at the table. Bread, breakfast cereals, pasta sauces, ready meals, cured meats, condiments, and even dissolvable painkillers all carry substantial hidden sodium. Without actively reading labels, most people have no accurate picture of their consumption. The benchmarks are straightforward: above 1.5g salt per 100g is high; 0.3g or below is low; multiplying the sodium figure by 2.5 gives the total salt content.
Individual needs complicate this further. Age, activity level, climate, and health conditions all shift the optimal amount. Endurance athletes in heat may need significantly more than sedentary individuals. Infants require less than 1g per day. The solution is not a blanket restriction. It is an informed, personalised balance, supported by label literacy and a willingness to replace sodium with herbs, citrus, spices, and umami-rich alternatives that carry flavour without the risk.
