Apple has announced a $500 billion investment in the United States over the next four years, the largest financial commitment made by a company in the United States to date. The company will begin producing Apple Intelligence servers in Houston, Texas, with Taiwanese company Foxconn on a 250,000 square foot facility. It will also open a supplier academy in Michigan and expand its project with American suppliers such as Corning in Kentucky. It will also enhance the production of television content and online streaming via its Apple TV Plus platform. Apple will also add 20,000 new jobs in the fields of research, development and manufacturing in the United States to boost the country’s economy by creating sustainable job opportunities that contribute to the country’s leadership in the digital economy and enhance American technological innovation by training and qualifying thousands of American engineers and technicians.
This huge investment came after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House after the US government imposed a 10% tariff on products imported from China, which affected Apple, which produces most of its products there, as it tries to enhance its competitiveness within the US by producing the components needed for its devices in the country.
The company did not clarify whether these investments were voluntary or through pressure from US President Donald Trump, who previously stated that any investments during his second term are an expression of companies’ confidence in his administration. President Trump is committed to encouraging local manufacturing by stimulating taxes on imports, which supports investments within the country, to achieve more employment, increase American competitiveness, and monopolize more advanced technological industries that were previously lost outside the country.
These trends have prompted Apple’s manufacturing partners, such as Foxconn and TSMC, to open new factories in the United States. The latter’s factory began producing chips for some Apple devices and iPads in Arizona last month. Apple is also working with local American companies, such as Qorvo, Prodcom and Skyworks, to produce local components for its products, in addition to expanding its data centers in Arizona, Oregon, Iowa, Nevada and North Carolina.
Apple previously contributed $10 billion to the American Manufacturing Fund to support domestic production, as it wants these investments to strengthen the American semiconductor industry and reduce dependence on foreign production, and added $39 billion to its previous plans, which reflects its commitment to the growth of the American economy. These investments will lead to an increase of 1,000 jobs annually compared to its previous plans, and Apple will benefit from these investments in strengthening its leadership in the artificial intelligence sector, cloud computing, and the semiconductor industry. As Private Cloud Computing servers will be important and necessary to operate the infrastructure of Apple Intelligence, which will use advanced M-Series chips that will be manufactured in Taiwan.
Apple will launch a manufacturing academy in Detroit to support and improve production processes by offering free courses in project management and manufacturing stages in partnership with American universities. These efforts aim to enhance the technical skills of American workers and increase the number of companies capable of competing globally. A commitment to developing the local manufacturing sector, stimulating entrepreneurs and innovation, and providing new opportunities for American citizens.
Apple is trying not to clash with President Trump. During his first term, it was able to obtain customs exemptions for some of its products, claiming that any sanctions on it would be a competitive advantage for Samsung and other foreign companies.
Despite all these efforts by Apple, it will face logistical, political and economic challenges related to weak local manufacturing and its long association with production outside the country, as recruiting hundreds of thousands of skilled workers, as was the case in China, is not available in the United States, whether in terms of economic cost, control of manufacturing techniques or professional discipline found in Chinese workers. Therefore, iPhone production will remain outside the United States, which keeps it at the mercy of customs tariffs and the trade war between China and the United States.
