Analyzing the Slang, We Speak

Ms. Williams stood at the whiteboard, Zipf’s Law diagrammed beside her. A classroom of eager faces, reflecting the diverse Black American experience, droned with anticipation.
“Alright, class,” Ms. Williams began, her voice warm and inviting. “Today, we’re diving into linguistics and data analysis. Can anyone tell me what this law is about?”
A hand shot up in the front row.
Ms. Williams smiled. “Yes, Isaiah?”
“Is it about how often words are used, Ms. Williams?” Isaiah asked, brow furrowed in concentration.
“Excellent guess, Isaiah!” Ms. Williams affirmed, writing his answer on the board. “Zipf’s Law tells us that the most frequent word in a large sample of text will appear roughly twice as often as the second most frequent word, three times as often as the third, and so on.”
A few students muttered amongst themselves.
Ms. Williams recognized the skepticism.
“I know what you’re thinking,” she said, a knowing smile on her face. “Why should we care about how often some words are used compared to others?”
Leaning against the desk, she continued, “Well, understanding Zipf’s Law can help us understand the power of language itself. Take, for example, the language we use in our community.”
The class perked up. Ms. Williams said, “Think about the slang words we all know and love. How often do we use ‘finna’ instead of ‘going to’? How about ‘bae’ instead of ‘girlfriend’?”
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the class. A student, Jasmine, said, “Yeah, Ms. Williams, those words are said way more than formal words.”
“Exactly, Jasmine!” Ms. Williams said, snapping her fingers. “Zipf’s Law at play! These words are so common in everyday speech that they follow this frequency pattern.”
After Ms. Williams’s inspiring conclusion about the importance of language, a student in the back row, let’s call him Jamal, pipes up.
“Ms. Williams,” Jamal begins, a hint of confusion in his voice, “this is all great about words and stuff, but what does it have to do with… like… statistics?”
A ripple of laughter spreads through the class. Students nod and exchange amused glances. Even Ms. Williams can’t help but chuckle.
“Jamal, you hit the nail on the head,” she says with a grin. “Seems like I got a little carried away there. So, let’s get back to the nuts and bolts.”
Ms. Williams walks back to the whiteboard, erasing her previous notes.
“Zipf’s Law, first and foremost, is a pattern we observe in data. Statistics is about finding these patterns and understanding what they tell us about the world. In this case, it’s about the frequency distribution of words. “
She draws a graph on the board with the familiar downward curve of Zipf’s Law. “This curve might look simple, but here’s what it’s saying:
Each word has a certain probability of appearing in a given text. The most common ones appear way more often.
Zipf’s Law works because we’re looking at large data sets.
Think of analyzing Shakespeare’s works or all the posts on Twitter for a day.
The cool thing is that Zipf-like patterns are everywhere, not just in language. We see it in city populations, website hits, you name it.”
Ms. Williams turns to the class. “So yeah, maybe the words we use are my passion, but Zipf’s Law gives us a tool to analyze that passion with a statistical lens.”
The laughter dies down, replaced by nods of understanding. Jamal raises his hand again.
“So, if I wanted to figure out the most popular slang words at our school, I could use this math stuff?”
Ms. Williams beams. “Exactly! You could collect a bunch of text conversations, run some analysis, and boom! Your very own Zipf’s Law curve of high school slang.”
The students break into excited chatter. Ms. Williams had taught them about Zipf’s Law and sparked a connection between the world of data and their lived experiences.
She walked back to the board. “But here’s the thing, class. Language is powerful. The words we use shape how we see the world. So, while Zipf’s Law helps us understand how language works, it’s also important to be aware of the words that might be missing.”
A thoughtful silence descended upon the class. Ms. Williams continued, “What if the most common words we hear daily are about limitations or stereotypes? What if the stories we read never feature heroes who look like us?”
A student, Malik, spoke up. “Are you saying we gotta fight against Zipf’s Law, Ms. Williams?”
Ms. Williams chuckled. “Not exactly, Malik. But what we can do is be aware of its patterns. We can actively seek out different voices and different stories. We can expand our vocabulary to include words that empower and represent us authentically.”
She concluded with a wink. “So, yeah, Zipf’s Law is cool and all, but let’s not forget the power we have to shape our language and, by extension, our world.”
The class bell rang, but the conversation lingered. Ms. Williams had planted a seed, a realization that the language they used held power and that within the patterns of data, there was space for their voices to be heard.
