To Hold or To Fold? The Psychology of the Weekend Before the Fed

There is a specific kind of quiet in the markets on a Friday afternoon right before a major macroeconomic storm. As I review my terminal today in Jakarta, the central question isn’t what to buy, but rather, what I am comfortable holding while the markets are closed.

Next week, the US Federal Reserve will convene for its highly anticipated rate decision. In the world of global finance, this is the gravitational center. The language used by Chairman Powell will instantly re-price the US Dollar, which in turn dictates the pressure on emerging market currencies like our Rupiah.

The Gambler vs. The Investor

It is always tempting to try and “front-run” the Fed. If you guess right, the immediate paper profits can be exhilarating. But over the years, I have learned that betting on central bank outcomes is a coin toss. It belongs to the realm of gamblers, not investors.

If you go into this weekend holding a heavily leveraged portfolio of cyclical stocks, you are effectively betting that global liquidity will align perfectly with your wishes. That is a risk profile I am no longer willing to accept.

The Domestic Buffer

However, going completely to cash isn’t the right answer either, primarily because of what is happening right outside our doors. Indonesia is rapidly approaching Eid al-Fitr. The domestic consumer cycle is in full swing. Money is being spent on travel, retail, and food.

This creates a fascinating bifurcation in my portfolio strategy. I am incredibly comfortable holding high-quality domestic consumer staples over the weekend. Their revenue streams for this quarter are locked in by the holiday season, making them relatively insulated from whatever happens in Washington D.C. next week.

My Personal Stance

My Friday routine today consists of trimming the fat. I am taking profits on assets that have bounced technically but lack a fundamental anchor. I am raising my cash reserves and ensuring my allocation to Gold remains untouched as a structural hedge against any sudden currency devaluation.

The goal of weekend portfolio management isn’t to maximize potential upside; it is to ensure that no matter what the headline is on Monday morning, you are in a position of strength, ready to react logically rather than out of panic.
