UNDERSTANDING OF SEX FROM THE WORD OF GOD — — —

Before we get into the study of the Tamar’s we should develop some understanding of sex from the Word of God, which should always be our ultimate authority on any subject.

1. The sexual act was created by God. Genesis 2:24: For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Becoming “one flesh” means the joining of both the flesh of the woman and the flesh of the man. This can only be done through sexual intercourse. Since God created it the act of sex is right and good. However, at this time of history there was only one man and one woman, and the fall had not occurred so there was no old sin nature to turn something good into sin.

2. Sex desire is a weakness in men. Prov. 5:1–3, 7–8:

1. My son, give attention to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding;

2. That you may observe discretion, and your lips may reserve knowledge.

3. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and smoother than oil is her speech.

7. Now then, my sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

8. Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house.

Solomon, to whom God gave more wisdom than any other man alive, wrote these proverbs. The above is just one section of the many warnings in proverbs and the rest of the Bible to men concerning the dangers of their lusts. These warnings are NOT GIVEN TO WOMEN in the Bible. With this in mind apparently sex is not our weakness.

3. Marriage created to avoid fornication. I Cor. 7:2–3:

2. But because of immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.

3. Let the husband fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.

God knows and understands the needs for sexual release; after all He designed the sex act. However, this scripture plainly tells us that it needs to be done in the controlled environment of marriage. Outside of marriage the sexual act is immoral.

4. Satan uses women’s sexuality to entice men away from God.

Genesis 3:17:

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’: Cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

Adam would not have disobeyed God’s command had it not been for Eve. Why did he listen to her? We can reasonably assume that Eve had what Adam wanted, and it sure wasn’t the fruit of the forbidden tree. We know it wasn’t her brain that got his attention because prior to this he had been teaching her the names of the plants and animals and about God. Her body was the only thing that could have caused him to disobey God. Satan knew this, and that is why he attacked Adam through Eve. There are many other examples in the Bible of Satan’s use of women that will be dealt with in another study.

5. God created woman to help the man. Genesis 2:18

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

and again in I Cor. 11:9:

for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.

As we have seen, Satan’s way is to use the woman to draw the man away from God. However, God created the woman as his helper, not his destroyer.

From the above we, as women, need to learn to recognize our sexuality, and our use of it.
