Discovering Open Source: A Beginner’s Log

I’m writing this as my first personal log into the world of open source.

I’ve heard about it countless times GitHub, pull requests, contributors but it always felt like something far away. Something only seasoned developers did. But lately, I’ve been wanting to go beyond tutorials and college projects, and actually build with others, for others.

This curiosity is what brought me to open source.

Right now, I’m exploring tools like Docker, Jenkins, and I’ve started reading up on how large projects are structured. I haven’t made a pull request yet. But I’ve starred a few repos, joined some Discord communities, and even started reading the “good first issue” tags.

I don’t want this post to be a guide it’s a marker. A snapshot of where I am.

I’m hoping this blog becomes a series. Maybe someday I’ll come back and write about my first successful PR, or a project I maintained, or a crazy bug I spent nights fixing.

For now, this is Day 1. And I’m okay with not knowing everything.

I just have to keep showing up.
