It Stayed a Little Longer
Notes from the Threshold

second layer — image AI (canva)
At first,
it only lasted an instant.
Too brief
to be certain.
Too light
to matter.
But then,
without warning,
it stayed a little longer.
Not much.
Just enough
to notice
that it wasn’t disappearing immediately.
He didn’t react.
There was nothing to react to.
Everything was still there.
The room.
The objects.
The person in front of him.
Nothing had changed.
And yet,
something was not exactly the same.
It was subtle.
So subtle
it could be ignored.
But once noticed,
it didn’t fully go away.
Like a second layer
that didn’t replace the first.
Just… stayed with it.
He blinked.
For a moment,
it seemed to reset.
Then it returned.
Not stronger.
Just… present.
He tried to focus on something specific.
It didn’t help.
The more he tried to isolate it,
the less clear it became.
So he stopped trying.
And that’s when
it became easier to notice.
Not because it grew.
But because
he wasn’t interfering anymore.
There was no shift
in what he was looking at.
Only in how
it was there.
As if space itself
had stopped being entirely passive.
He didn’t question it.
Not yet.
There was still
nothing to explain.
Only something
that didn’t leave
as quickly as before.
