The Season of Cycol: BONK and Solana bring IRL art back to NYC

As the summer winds down and seasons change, a new era for Art on Solana begins.

**Cycol Gallery **opens its doors for the first time Friday August 29th, offering a powerful message to all who make their way to the corner of Allen and Delancy: it’s time for a new cycle.

With the support of BONK and The Solana Foundation, this won’t be just another exhibition hall, but a tangible and intentionally curated space for artists to grow beyond online network effects.

This new IRL art gallery on the storied Lower East Side has an ambitious mission: empower, educate, and elevate Solana’s artists and community in the greatest city in the world.

Many traditional artists, digital or otherwise, made pivots away from traditional gallery models to the blockchain during the height of NFTs, and at the time, Solana became widely known for PFP collections, hype and tribalism, and a marketplace culture often disconnected from the voices of the artists themselves.

But cycles come and cycles go, for the market and the makers. Before Cycol’s Founder, JT Liss was curating shows and collaborating with some of the best artists in the world, he was teaching, working in catering kitchens, hustling in high-end hospitality, and, by his own admission, dreaming too small. His decades-long leap from service work to opening a permanent gallery reflects the same peaks and valleys artists face throughout their careers.

Cycol Gallery’s very name is a reminder of the continuity and renewal that defines creative work:

Artists go through cycols (cycles) of their own. The ups and downs of a hero’s journey to follow a passion. Through it all they pursue the one thing that feeds their soul. The act of creation. Cycol Gallery represents this journey. Started by artists, led by artists, and for the culture of art, no matter the medium.

The gallery’s model is different by design, taking from existing gallery models what works, and letting artists lead on what doesn’t. Instead of elevating a single style or chasing quick flips, the team is experimenting with decentralized curation.

A rotating group of curators collaborates to produce exhibitions with clear themes but broad coverage across mediums. The team is stacked and includes NYC-legend Steve Sweatpants curating photography, Lowbrow Native curating digital art, Harris Lobel leading operations, with Douglas Robert McCurdy and Lampwrecked on operations as well.

The first exhibition, set for September, will highlight street and graffiti art both on-chain and off. The second exhibition will pivot to photography, and going forward the gallery plans to explore new frontiers in form and community, remaining open to all mediums of art. Each show will be accompanied by critical writing, blending digital and traditional art criticism to give these works the legitimacy and context they deserve.

Solana remains a strong choice for artists breaking into blockchain, but often those artists lack onramps and education. BONK Art Masters and Exchange Art currently offer a number of initiatives through workshops, writing, and spaces to help educate and provide artists opportunities to grow. The physical gallery will only further add to this potential for growth.

Importantly, the gallery is rethinking how digital art lives in the physical world. Through a partnership with Blackdove, each NFT sold at Cycol Gallery comes bundled with a digital display, bridging the gap between phone screens and living room walls. Collectors can even preview and test works from Exchange Art’s network directly through the displays before making a purchase. The goal is to give digital art the same sense of place, presence, and permanence that a framed canvas or sculpture commands.

The backbone behind this breakthrough is BONK and The Solana Foundation. Known widely as Solana’s community coin, BONK has been one of the most vocal and active supporters of artists and art infrastructure in the last few years. When Exchange Art, Solana’s largest art marketplace, was under threat, BONK stepped in, acquiring and stabilizing it so that the community wouldn’t lose a vital platform. From there, dreams grew bigger. JT recalls the moment when core contributors from BONK asked him: “What about a gallery?” His first reaction was disbelief: “I’m not dreaming big enough.” Eight months later, after setbacks, dropped leases, and endless scouting from Las Vegas to Manhattan, Cycol Gallery is a reality.

The choice of New York was deliberate. For artists on Solana to prove legitimacy to the broader world, they still have to be seen, written about, and collected in one of the world’s cultural capitals. The Lower East Side, with its history of counterculture, its blend of grit and creativity, and its role in incubating art movements from street photography to punk, is the perfect stage. It’s a place where mass adoption doesn’t mean homogenization; it means welcoming blockchain culture into conversation with a city that has always valued both experimentation and tradition.

Fueled with the same global vision as their BONK backers, the team is thinking big, mirroring blockchain scale even as they are led by art, with JT recently posting: “What if a single gallery destination teamed up with other single destination galleries across the globe to create a network of support for interesting traveling exhibitions that wasn’t max extractive or supergatekeepy on acceptance?”
