This AI Tool Has Been Earning Me $400–$500/Month — Here’s My Honest Take After 6 Months

I ignored every “$10K/month with AI” promise. Built something boring instead. It actually works.

Every week, my Medium feed is full of people claiming AI made them $12,000 last month. Screenshots of Stripe dashboards. Vague “systems.” Hooks that promise to change your life in a 4-minute read.

I write about AI for a living. I’ve tested dozens of these tools — LLMs, automation stacks, no-code builders, agent frameworks. So when I say I’ve been quietly making $400–$500/month from one AI-powered workflow, I want to be very clear about what that means, how it actually works, and where most people get it completely wrong.

This isn’t a flex. It’s a breakdown.

Why I Stopped Chasing the Big Numbers

I’ve been writing technical content under the handle inprogrammer on Medium for over a year. My niche is AI tools and developer platforms — model comparisons, benchmarks, API walkthroughs, that kind of thing.

For the first few months, I treated every article like a lottery ticket. Big topics, big promises, trying to go viral. The results were inconsistent and exhausting.

Then I did something that felt boring at the time: I started optimizing for compounding, not spikes.

The shift happened when I noticed that my most boring article — a straightforward breakdown of a developer API — was outperforming my flashiest deep-dives by 3x in monthly read time. Not because it went viral. Because it ranked. People kept finding it.

That changed how I thought about this.

The Actual Tool: What It Is (and Isn’t)

The AI tool at the center of my workflow is Claude (specifically the API + claude.ai for drafting). Before you roll your eyes — this isn’t a “use ChatGPT to write articles” story. That’s not the system.

Here’s what the workflow actually looks like:

Step 1 — SEO-led topic discovery

I use a combination of Ahrefs (or even free tools like Google Search Console + KeywordSurfer) to find high-intent, low-competition keywords in the AI/developer space. Not “best AI tools 2026” — that’s a bloodbath. I look for long-tail, information-dense queries: things like “how to use Claude API for structured output” or “Gemini vs GPT-5 for code generation benchmarks.”

Step 2 — Claude as a research accelerator, not a ghostwriter

This is the part most people misunderstand. I don’t prompt Claude and publish whatever comes out. That produces average content that ranks nowhere.

Instead, I use Claude to:

  • Rapidly summarize primary sources (model release papers, benchmark datasets, developer docs)
  • Generate structured outlines based on what the search intent actually needs
  • Draft technical sections I then rewrite in my own voice
  • Stress-test my arguments (“what would a skeptical developer say about this claim?”)

The output is still mine. Claude cuts my research time from 4–5 hours per article to about 90 minutes.

Step 3 — Publishing cadence over volume

I publish 4–6 articles per month. Not 20. I’d rather have 5 articles that each earn $80–$100/month in MPP income than 20 that each earn $8.

Step 4 — Article longevity through updates

Every 6–8 weeks, I revisit my top-performing articles. Models get updated. Benchmarks change. Pricing shifts. A 15-minute refresh on an existing article can add another 2–3 months of relevance — and Medium’s algorithm rewards updated content.

The Honest Numbers

Let me be specific, because vague income claims are useless.

Month 1 was rough. Month 2 was better. The real inflection was Month 4, when 3 older articles started compounding reads simultaneously.

The total isn’t passive in the “set it and forget it” sense. I work roughly 10–12 hours/month on this. That’s maintenance, updates, new articles, and SEO tweaks. At ~$450/month, that’s about $40–$45/hour — not life-changing, but real.

What Claude Actually Does Well (And Where It Falls Short)

Since I’m a developer writing about AI, I should give you an actual evaluation, not just a testimonial.

Claude is genuinely good at:

  • Long-form structured reasoning — it doesn’t lose the thread over 3,000+ word outputs
  • Technical accuracy when given proper context (PDFs, docs, API references)
  • Producing SEO-friendly outlines that match search intent
  • Rewriting in different tones without losing substance
  • Catching logical gaps in my arguments

Where it underperforms:

  • Anything requiring real-time data (it doesn’t know what happened last week without search tools)
  • Generating code examples for very new APIs — it hallucinates method signatures
  • Producing genuinely opinionated voice — the default output sounds like a well-informed committee, not a person
  • Replacing actual testing — if I haven’t run the tool myself, the article will feel hollow

That last point is important. The most common mistake I see from writers using AI for tech content is publishing AI-generated “experience” without having the experience. Readers in the developer community can smell it immediately. The signal is usually over-smooth explanations that miss the friction of real use.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Medium SEO Is Different

Medium doesn’t work like Google. You’re not just ranking against the internet — you’re ranking within Medium’s internal distribution system, which is driven by:

  • Read ratio (did people finish the article?)
  • Early engagement velocity (claps, highlights in the first 48 hours)
  • Tags (3 specific tags beat 5 generic ones)
  • Publication placement (Towards AI, Level Up Coding, and Better Programming still distribute aggressively)

Claude helps me optimize for read ratio by making articles dense but scannable — clear subheadings, short paragraphs, data tables, and a strong payoff in the conclusion. That’s a structure you can prompt for explicitly.

The thing Claude can’t do is get you into the right publication or build relationships with editors. That’s still human work.

Why I’m Not Trying to Scale to $5,000/Month

People always ask this. The honest answer: I don’t want to.

At $450/month with 10 hours of work, this is a high-leverage side income that fits around my primary work. If I scaled to $5K, I’d need to either publish 10x more content (burnout) or hire writers (margin compression, quality control). I’ve seen other creators on Medium go that route and watch their read ratios collapse because the content gets diluted.

More importantly — I trust the compounding effect. Six months ago, my catalog earned $31. Today it earns $463. The catalog is the same articles, just older and more indexed. I haven’t changed the formula.

That’s the actual passive income story. Not the first month. The compound curve.

What I’d Do If I Was Starting From Zero Today

If you’re a developer or technical writer thinking about building something similar, here’s what I’d actually prioritize:

1. Pick a specific sub-niche, not “AI.” “AI” is too broad. “Claude API for production developers” or “open-source LLMs for mobile apps” is a niche. Specificity wins on Medium because it signals expertise.

2. Use Claude for research compression, not content generation. Feed it docs, papers, release notes. Ask it to summarize what changed, what matters, what’s overhyped. Then write your take.

3. Publish 4 articles, not 1. One article won’t tell you anything. Four articles across different topics, with different keyword intents, gives you actual signal on what resonates with your specific audience.

4. Optimize your first 150 words obsessively. On Medium, that’s what determines whether someone hits the paywall or bounces. The first paragraph needs to tell the reader exactly what they’ll get and why you’re the right person to tell them.

5. Don’t monetize the $10K dream. Monetize the $450 reality. $450/month, consistently, is $5,400/year. It’s a car payment. It’s a vacation. It compounds. Chase that before you chase the lottery.

Final Verdict: Is This Worth It?

Yes ,with the right expectations.

Claude as a tool genuinely reduces the grunt work of technical content creation. Research time, structuring, first-draft scaffolding all faster. The income is real and growing. The work is manageable.

But the tool isn’t the system. The system is: specific niche + SEO-led topics + real hands-on experience + Claude as acceleration layer + publishing consistency + content updates.

Remove any of those components and the numbers don’t work. Add all of them and $400–$500/month is completely achievable within 3–6 months.

That’s the honest version of this story.
