AI and the Fragile Threads of Society: A Plea Against Weaponization and Digital Disruption
The dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping our world in unimaginable ways. From healthcare to education, AI holds the promise of transforming societies, especially in the Global South, where cultural richness and interconnectedness thrive. However, amidst this optimism, a dark shadow looms—the militarization of AI and the threat of digital warfare.
“AI can do more brutal explosions than the Fat Man and Little Boy. Are we still waiting for major powers to demonstrate this capability before bringing legal bindings, or is it high time to establish global regulations?”
This question echoes in my mind as I reflect on the historical devastation caused by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The ‘Fat Man’ and ‘Little Boy’ not only obliterated cities but also scarred humanity forever. Yet, the post-war period saw the establishment of nuclear policies and treaties aimed at preventing such horrors in the future.
Why then do we tread so carelessly with AI in warfare? The potential of AI-powered weapons to cause mass destruction, disrupt societies, and erase cultural legacies is terrifyingly real. Unlike nuclear weapons, which are often bound by complex infrastructures and visible threats, AI can infiltrate unseen, strike unpredictably, and evolve autonomously.
Beyond physical warfare, AI poses an even more insidious threat-digital warfare. Strategic deepfakes and AI-driven misinformation campaigns can fracture social cohesion, disrupt political stability, and dismantle cultural harmony. In societies of the Global South, where cultural legacies are passed down through generations, such digital manipulations could erode trust, incite violence, and dismantle centuries-old social fabrics.
Memetics, the study of how ideas, behaviors, and cultural elements spread, provides a critical lens here. AI could disrupt this cultural transmission, replacing human ingenuity with algorithms that lack empathy and historical context. An AI observatory could play a crucial role in understanding societal transformations by analyzing how masses react to and use AI. This is not just about the tools themselves, but about observing what is happening, how AI affects social cohesion, and how cultural balance can be maintained in an era where strategic deepfakes and digital manipulation are potential threats.
The urgency to act is now. Just as nuclear weapons led to global treaties, AI in warfare and digital warfare demands immediate international attention. We cannot afford to wait for a demonstration of AI’s brutal capabilities. No single nation should wield AI power akin to nuclear dominance.
We need global frameworks that ensure AI is developed ethically, used responsibly, and never weaponized-physically or digitally. Let us not wait for another catastrophic event to shake our conscience. The time to establish AI policies is now-for the sake of humanity, culture, and future generations.
This blog is part of an ongoing series exploring the impact of AI on society, focusing on the cultural and anthropological aspects of the Global South.
